ATHCO
ATHCO is a creator-athlete community connecting athletes, brands, and like-minded individuals across South Africa.
Through long-form podcast conversations with athletes, creators, and founders, in-house content production, and in-person fitness events.
He’s 22 and one of the fastest stand up paddle sprinters on the planet. Junior World Champion at 18. On his first ever international event. Bronze in the Pro Men’s division at 21. World Cup gold in Italy.
He gets almost nothing for it.
No salary. No government backing. Meanwhile paddlers at his exact level in other countries get free cars, houses and full team support.
And here’s the part nobody talks about: being one of the best in the world isn’t enough anymore. Cameron Tripney⚡️ has spent his whole life focused on performance and now he has to pull out a camera and film his training too, because results don’t get you sponsors. Content does.
He was terrified of water as a kid. He’d freak out about soap in his eyes. Now he’s world-class on it.

Amish was lonely. COVID had just ended his cricket career, and he’d gotten into running, but he was doing it all alone. Something was missing.
So he invited a few old cricket mates: meet at a coffee shop, do a 5K, grab a coffee. He made an Instagram page that same day.
Only two of them showed up. But five strangers had already found the page. Ten people ran that first morning.
Five years later, Amish’s Running to Coffee is in four cities across South Africa. He built one of the country’s OG run clubs completely by accident.
His secret to a community that lasts? Stop chasing numbers. “People come to your crew for one reason, you.”

Twelve months ago, Jake couldn’t swim 25 metres. He’d never owned a bike. He had no athletic background at all.
Then, after a few beers at a New Year’s Eve party, he signed up for an Ironman 70.3 on the spot. The entry was 500 euros. He didn’t even own a bike yet.
He started filming the whole journey from session one. Partly just to keep himself accountable. Eight months later he qualified for the 70.3 World Championships. Four months into posting, off a single race, he landed an ambassadorship with Ironman itself. His first brand deal came at 6,500 followers.
Jake Bird breaks down the entire playbook. How he grew his following, why talking-to-camera content beats viral videos, and why you should never start posting just for the money.
Part comeback story, part social media masterclass.

Years ago, Michael was battling drug addiction that nearly took his life.
The turning point? Supporting his borther at the Two Ocean Marathon changed everything. Something clicked.
His first run was 2km on the promenade in normal takkies. It snowballed into an obsession and by complete accident, into one of Cape Town’s biggest running communities.
Since then he ran the Boston Marathon twice. The UTCT 100-miler, where he was so broken he walked the last 70km to the finish line over 17 hours because he refused to give up.
Michael Obery doesn’t just run. He’s the guy at every Cape Town race screaming your name from the sidelines. This is his story and it’s a special one.

He was the kid picked last in PE. Shy, introverted, never on a team. At 15 he started going to the gym just to escape everyone. His nickname became “Creatine.”
Ten years later: marathons, ultras, Ironmans all while staying jacked year-round. Over 200 people coached.
His most surprising lesson? When he cut his gym sessions from six days a week to three and added cardio for Ironman prep, he looked better than he ever had and got stronger.
Keaton Mac breaks down how to run without losing muscle, why most hybrid athletes train completely wrong, and why doing cardio can actually make you bigger.
If you’ve been scared to run because you’ll lose your gains, watch this.

She got into running because of a boy. Her first marathon was a 4:20 she hated every minute of.
A few years later she qualified for Kona. The Ironman World Championships while working full-time in a mining job, sleeping seven nights a month in her own bed, training 28 hours a week.
Then she walked away from all of it. Sold the bike. Packed away the wetsuit. She ran from Joburg to Cape Town. 400km in a week, then raced a 3:13 marathon the next day. That’s when she knew running was the one.
Two years later: top 20 at Comrades. A silver medal at her first ever Comrades when everyone told her to just finish. And this year, Carla Johnson went pro.
This one’s part masterclass, part origin story, and all heart.

ATHCO was founded on one mission: to help athletes turn their passion for sport into their profession through the power of social media. The new look you’re seeing today is us growing into that mission same belief, sharper version of it.
What started as an impulsive idea between two friends on a FaceTime turned into something real in just 6 months. More than 20 incredible guests on the podcast, sharing their stories, their highs, their lows, and their own way of turning passion into profession. Our first community events, finally bringing this online community together in person. Something we never thought possible in such a short space of time.
None of it would have happened without you. Every guest who trusted us with their story, everyone who showed up to an event, everyone who pressed play, commented, or shared. This community is the whole thing. Thank you.
But this is just the beginning. We’re beyond excited to take ATHCO to the next level. Over the next few months we’ll have even more incredible athletes and creators on the podcast, and we’ll double down on building a real, physical community you can be part of. A place to meet like-minded people all striving to turn their passion for sport into their dream life.
So get ready. There are some big things on the horizon.
If you want in: follow along, turn on notifications, and come find us at the next event.
And don’t forget. Lock in.
