5 REASONS TO RUN THE BLACK MOUNTAIN ULTRA

Ultimately there are way more than just five reasons to join us for race weekend, but let’s start here.👇🏽

⛰️ The course runs through the Swartberg Mountains, recognised for their exceptional biodiversity as a UNESCO World Heritage site, so you get genuinely rare, protected landscape underfoot rather than a standard trail loop. 

⛰️ The route uses trails not normally open to the public, including the famous Donkey Trail and The Ladder descent. That’s a real point of difference from most ultras, where you have access to the trails year round.

⛰️ A route with a story, not just distance — the 73km and 43km routes pass through Gamkaskloof – Die Hel, a defining landmark along the way. The whole race weekend is a celebration of the Klein Karoo’s culture, history and beauty.

⛰️ITRA-accredited, so it counts toward your running CV. All three main distances, the 73km, 43km, and 19km are accredited UTMB Index distances recognised by the International Trail Running Association.

⛰️ Race village hospitality, not just a start/finish line. Race weekend is built around local food, drinks and entertainment, where the trails meet the “gees”.

With entries opening on the 15th of October it’s time to think about what distance you’ll be tackling on race weekend. There really is a distance for any level of trail runner on race weekend.

Choose from:
⛰️73km Ultra Marathon - Seasoned trail runners and mountain adventurers.
⛰️ 43km Mountain Marathon - Seasoned trail runners, mountain adventurers and those wanting to challenge themselves to a longer trail distance.
⛰️ 19km Half Marathon - New to trail but want a bit of a challenge.
⛰️ 6km Fun Run - Families, kids and those just wanting to feel part of the event.
