"Locking in" is the ability to block distraction and execute. It's a skill. And you can practice it without changing a single thing the coach does.
Practical ways to lock in (outside of practice):
Before practice:
Β· Same playlist on the way to the pool. Same routine getting out of the car. Predictability tells your brain: we're switching modes now.
After the race (for parents to ask):
Β· "What did you think about during the race?" If the answer is "nothing", that's locked in.
At home:
Β· Visualize for 60 seconds the night before practice. See yourself at the wall. Hearing the set. Breathing before the push-off. That's rehearsal. It works.
Locking in is not a mood. It's a choice you make before you even touch the water.
Stronger together. Locked in together.
Did you know? Swimming reduces stress and anxiety better than land-based exercise.
A 2020 study in Psychiatry Research found that aquatic exercise significantly lowered tension, anger, and depression more than traditional gym workouts. The combination of rhythmic breathing, cold water, and repetitive motion triggers a parasympathetic response. Your body's natural "calm down" system.
For kids? Less anxiety before school. Better sleep at night. More regulated emotions all week.

According to a 2026 study published in the medical journal Cureus, swimmers had significantly higher lung capacity than both runners and sedentary individuals. In fact, swimmers showed the highest values of all three groups tested: in forced vital capacity, airflow, and peak breathing power.
Why? Because water pressure constantly pushes against your chest. Every breath you take while swimming is deeper and more deliberate than on land. Your respiratory muscles work harder. Your lungs expand more. And over time, they adapt.
Competitive swimmers can hold their breath 2 to 3 times longer than non-swimmers. Not because they're superhuman, because their lungs are trained.
That doesn't just help in the pool. Better lung function means better oxygen flow to your brain. More energy. Sharper focus. Every single day.
So the next time someone asks why you swim? Tell them you're training your lungs. For life.

Behind every great swimmer is a mom who packed the snack bag, dried the tears, and said 'you can do it' one more time. Thank a swim mom today. Happy Mother's day to all our Tiger moms. π―π©·
