Bridging course for Teaching (For those who don't qualify for the Bachelor of Education in 🇿🇦)

💡The University of South Africa (UNISA) is the ONLY University in South Africa which has a “Bridging course for undergraduates" which is specifically meant for Teaching.

It the ONLY university which has bridging courses which helps you qualify you for the "Bachelor of Education" degree even though you do not qualify with your matric results.

💡So what this means is you can do these bridging courses regardless of whether you passed Matric with a Higher Certificate or diploma pass or low aps or marks as long as you qualify for the bridging course.

UNISA has 3 Bridging courses in Education.
Each Higher certificate is specifically meant to qualify you for a certain Bachelor of Education degree.

They have one for:
✅️•Foundation phase and Intermediate training
✅️•Senior Phase Maths and Sciences
✅️•Senior Phase and Further Education Training

❗No other University in the country has an option to study the "Bachelor of Education" if you don’t have a Bachelor pass and if you don’t have the requirement APS and marks required for the Bachelor of Education.

With all other universities in South Africa, its either you qualify for the Bachelor of Education or you don’t.
❌They mostly do not have any alternative ways to qualify you for the Bachelor of Education.
❗ If you don’t meet the requirements at other universities:
✅️•You either have to go and UPGRADE until you qualify OR
✅️•You simply enroll for another degree THEN after graduating you can do your PGCE.

💡At UNISA,
Anyone CAN study the Bachelor of Education and end up being a QUALIFIED TEACHER.
💡 This is possible through their Higher Certificates in Education

UNISA Higher Certificates:
✅️•Duration (Only 1 year then you are done)
✅️•Fully funded by NSFAS (Yes NSFAS Funds Higher certificates from UNISA)

The best part?
💡NSFAS will fund you for BOTH your Higher Certificate plus your degree if you meet requirements for the NSFAS Funding

How it works is:
✅You apply at UNISA for the specific higher certificate you want to do out of the 3,
✅Spend 1 year studying,
✅Then after completing it successfully you QUALIFY for the Bachelor of Education.
✅You will apply for the Bachelor of Education using your Higher Certificate and not your matric results.
(You can apply while you're doing your Higher Certificate or after completing it)

To qualify for the higher certificate:
✅️You need to have passed Matric with a higher certificate, Diploma or Bachelor pass
AND
✅️You also need to meet the minimum requirements for English and the APS required

With UNISA Higher Certificates you go from :
💡Higher certificate (NQF 5) to Degree (NQF 7)

NB:
💡University of Pretoria does have a higher certificate in Sports which allow you to enroll for the Bachelor of Education...
This would only work for those who actually have a passion for sports.
I only recommend this route for those who actually have a passion for Sport.

Actually, UNISA should be one of your main focuses if you genuinely want to get a Higher Certificate, Diploma or Degree at a university with low marks.

UNISA is one of the few public universities in South Africa which:

✅️ Offers recognised qualifications with minimum requirements as low as 14 to 19 APS
✅️ May allow you to work towards a Diploma or Degree even with low APS
✅️ May have Higher Certificate / Bridging Course routes that can help you work towards qualifications you initially did not qualify for with your Matric results
✅️ May allow you to work towards careers in fields such as:
• Accounting
• Law
• Education
• Social Work
• Management
• Tourism
• Criminal Justice
• And other fields

I will be very honest with you.

Most universities in South Africa do not have many options for students with an APS between 14 and 19, because that APS is extremely low.

At the majority of universities, you may not qualify for many courses, or any courses at all, with an APS below 20.

At the few universities which do have courses that require 18 or 19 APS, the options may be extremely limited. In many cases, you may find courses in fields such as:
• Music
• Theology and Divinity
• Sport Coaching
• Fine Arts
• Other Arts-related courses

Please note: I am not saying these courses are useless.

However, you need to be realistic and ask yourself:

• Is this field in demand?
• Are there job opportunities?
• Will this qualification help me build the future I want?
• Am I choosing this course because I love it, or because it is the only thing I qualify for?

What I absolutely love about UNISA is that, yes, their minimum requirements are lower compared to many other universities, but they still offer recognised qualifications in fields that many students actually want to pursue.

UNISA is a public university.

✅️ They offer Higher Certificates, Diplomas and Degrees
✅️ Their qualifications are registered at NQF levels, just like qualifications from other recognised universities
✅️ They offer distance learning, which is helpful for people who cannot attend contact classes

💡 A Bachelor of Education degree from UNISA is still a Bachelor of Education degree.

After completing the qualification, you still follow the required professional registration process, such as registering with SACE if you studied towards teaching.

Please put your pride aside and consider applying at UNISA so that you can increase your chances of being considered and also work towards qualifications that can open opportunities for you.

The whole point of going to university is NOW just to say you are studying.

The goal is to study something that can help you:
✅️ Graduate
✅️ Improve your life
✅️ Secure employment
✅️ Start a business one day
✅️ Build a better future

✅️Are currently in Matric or Passed Matric and want to go to a TVET College to do NATED / Report 191 (N4-N6).

✅️ Are currently in Matric or Passed Matric and want to study a Higher Certificate, Diploma or Degree.

✅️ Are currently studying at a TVET College and want to use your NCV Level 4 or NATED N4-N6 to apply to university.

✅️ Are currently doing a Higher Certificate at a university, or already completed one, and now want to apply for a Diploma or Degree.

✅️ Applied for NSFAS in 2025 or 2026 before September, got approved, but never registered at a university or TVET College.

✅️ Applied for NSFAS in 2026, 2025, 2024 or previous years, got approved, but never registered at a university or TVET College.

✅️ Applied for NSFAS in 2025 or 2026 before September or previous years and got rejected.
✅️ Applied for NSFAS, got approved, registered, but never received funding.

✅️ Applied for NSFAS, got approved, registere and then NSFAS cancelled your funding during the year.

✅️ Are currently a university or TVET College student but you are not funded.

✅️ Are planning to study in 2027 and know very well that your biggest worry is not only being accepted, but how you will pay for your studies.

REMEMBER:
To qualify for the NSFAS bursary, you generally need to be:
✅️ A South African citizen or permanent resident
✅️ A person who wishes to study at a public university or public TVET College in South Africa

And you must fall under one of the following:
✅️ You are a SASSA grant recipient, or
✅️ Your household income is not more than R350 000 per year, or
✅️ Your household income is not more than R600 000 per year if you are living with a disability

All the people mentioned above must prepare and apply for NSFAS if they will need funding to study.
