Ask Dem: Time Off Tied To Money?
āHi Dem,
Could you help me out with this? Our leave policy gives staff 15 days leave. We have set specific goals per recruiter and are considering allowing additional time off after they have hit their target of R150 000.00 in billings and at R200 000.00 in billings it would increase and increase again at R300 000.00. I am struggling with the amount of time to give. I am considering 3 extra days at R200 000.00 and an additional 5 days at R300 000.00. What does DEM say?

NEW Ask Dem: Candidate Background Issues?
āHi Dem,
I have been recruiting for just over 6 years now and recently had 2 placements that had the same situation that I have never had happen before. Each candidate had a criminal charge in their background. For one of them it was 13 years ago and for the other it was just over 7 years ago. They both ended up coming through okay and accepted their offers but what is your suggestion on bringing this to the clients' attention? I have seen most companies go back 5-7 years, so with both of these cases I told the client that something may come up but didn't give any further details. It turns out that neither came up and it wasn't an issue. Your feedback is appreciated.

Hi Dem,
I read everything you send out even though Iāve been in this business many years, I still find myself learning. I have a question pertaining to candidate control and I am looking for a "Dem-ismā.
Lately I am having a lot of candidates simply ghost me and it is happening at each phase of the process. Part of it I can blame on the candidate, the rest of the responsibility is mine for not establishing the ground rules up front. I need to control my candidates better to provide appropriate feedback to my clients. What would you use to reduce the number of disappearing candidates?

Ask Dem: Can I Sue my Candidate?
āHi Dem,
I placed a sales executive with a new client. He happily accepted the position. He then asked to move the start date from 4 weeks to 8 weeks to get a bonus he was waiting for. He assured me that there was nothing his company could do to make him change his mind. He called and said leaving was harder than expected but I managed to talk him through it. He signed an offer letter first week in September and resigned on the 1st of October. He started his new job and everything seemed to be going very well until (after 2 days) he told his new boss that heās accepted a promotion with his old company and heās going back.
My client says we should sue him for our fee, since the search was successfully completed and he said he'd be happy to testify for me. Do you think we have a case? If so, how would you recommend that we proceed?

Ask Dem: Should I go International?
āHi Dem,
Thanks in advance for any help you can offer with my question. I have been approached by a Saudi Arabian company which regularly looks for South African experts for projects in Saudi. Right now, they source most of their candidates through ads. They believe the quantity and quality is low, and have been told to use an agency. I'm thinking about doing it, but I think my standard fee agreement is pretty weak for an international client. Do you have anything you are willing to share with me that might be helpful? Have you ever done business with an international company that had no SA presence to hold liable? I am inclined to ask for some money up front...a retainer maybe? Should I get an attorney involved?
