This reminds me of my mentor. Years ago he told us that the mixing console is your instrument. You are part of the band. Not “them and me”. In the same way that if the pianist plays a bad note, it affects the whole part of that song. In the same way if you push the wrong fader, it affects the song.

During shows, Conni Ettinger seems to play the console like an instrument, pushing k***s, moving faders, touching interfaces 🎚️🎛️

For Conni, it’s one of so many approaches to get live sound right: “Of course, I could automate certain things in my mixing, but I don't want to. Because for me, it's like playing an instrument. It's like being a part of the show. I like to actually do things all the time instead of, I don't know, just unmuting for a little snare bomb. I ride the faders, you know. There are many approaches to get your sound right – this is mine. My instrument is the console, and I’m playing it to my best.”

Work for a cause, not applause! One of my mentors once said “if no one says anything about your sound, you’ve done a good job.” I’ve always tried to encourage not to feel discouraged when no one acknowledges the work that they put in. The same mentor taught me that “ the audience should hear the music, the instruments, the singing, the speech and not the ‘sound’”.
