Thierry Henry – Sundowns Played Real Football

As Thierry Henry, I’ve always said African teams still have a long way to go when it comes to competing on the world stage, and we saw that again at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup. But I must give credit where it’s due Mamelodi Sundowns really stood out. For me, they were the only African team that performed at a high level in this tournament.

They only lost one match, and that was against a top European side, Borussia Dortmund. Besides that, they showed great discipline, tactical awareness, and most importantly they played beautiful football. Sundowns dominated possession in almost every game, something you don’t often see from African teams in these types of competitions.

Their attackers were sharp, full of confidence, and always looked like they could score. It wasn’t just about defending and hoping for a counter they were controlling the tempo.

Honestly, Sundowns were the only African team that really looked like they belonged at this level. They made Africa proud.
