Why does South Africa keep producing incredible young talent, only to watch so many of these athletes disappear before they ever reach their peak?
It’s a question that keeps me up at night, and honestly, it’s been a constant theme throughout my entire coaching career.
After thirty years in this sport, I can tell you one thing for certain: the issue is definitely not a lack of talent. Our country is absolutely swimming in gifted young athletes.
The breakdown happens after we find them.
We see it happen all the time. A promising kid gets pushed way too hard, way too early, and burns out. Another gets completely overlooked just because they didn't win a medal in their first season. And for so many others, they simply don't have the basic support, structure, or environment to actually grow.
Raw talent is just a starting point. It’s never been enough on its own.
Without a deliberate, long-term development system, even the most naturally gifted athlete is going to lose confidence, lose direction, and eventually just walk away from the sport.
At the Art of Running Academy, we’ve always looked at our roles a bit differently. It can’t just be about clocking times at weekend sessions or chasing quick medals. Our real job is building the athlete from the ground up—focusing on fundamentals, movement mechanics, mindset, and discipline first. Real, sustainable success takes years of steady building, not a few weeks of intense drilling.
Every single one of us—coaches, parents, schools, and clubs—shares the responsibility of fixing this. We have to start creating environments where these kids can actually thrive for the long haul.
Talent gets you through the door, but a proper development system is what actually keeps you in the room. The future of South African athletics isn't about finding more talent. We already have it. It’s about how well we protect and build the talent we already have.
If you are a parent, teacher, or fellow coach out there—what do you think is the biggest bottleneck holding our young athletes back? Let’s talk about it in the comments.

Talent Isn't Found. It's Developed.
Every champion you admire was once an unknown athlete with potential that others couldn't yet see.
At ART OF RUNNING ACADEMY, we don't just coach athletes—we develop people. We believe talent is more than natural ability. It is the result of the right opportunity, expert coaching, a positive environment, and an unwavering commitment to continuous growth.
As coaches, our responsibility goes beyond improving times and winning medals. We help young athletes build confidence, discipline, resilience, leadership, and a mindset that prepares them for success both on and off the track.
"Talent is not what an athlete is today. Talent is what an athlete can become when opportunity, coaching, environment, and commitment come together."
— Tsepho Khoza
Whether your child is taking their very first steps into athletics or dreaming of representing South Africa on the international stage, every journey begins with a solid foundation.
We are committed to discovering potential, nurturing excellence, and developing the next generation of champions—one athlete at a time.
At ART OF RUNNING ACADEMY, we don't chase talent. We build it.

Katlego Malatji — What a comeback. 👏
From 8 months on the sidelines with injury to 11th place at the Phantane Street Mile 5km Elite in a time of 15:07.
That's 55 seconds faster than his 2025 time of 16:02. Progress earned the hard way.
Katlego, you Grace The Race. The academy is proud of you.

ACADEMY ATHLETE SPOTLIGHT: Zenzile Pheko 🥉
Our very own Zenzile Pheko delivered a standout performance at the Phantane Street Mile 5km Elite race in Durban, finishing 3rd with a blazing 13:44 PB — a 7-second improvement on his previous 5km best.
What's most impressive? This PB came mid-training block, while Zenzile is deep in high-intensity preparation for the upcoming ABSA Durban 10KM. To run faster while building for longer is a clear sign of rising fitness and smart, patient work.
This result is a testament to:
Consistent, structured training under Coach Tsepho Khoza
The supportive, competitive environment here at ART OF RUNNING Academy
Strong club backing from Boxer AC and
Quality race opportunities provided by directors like Khumalo
Strong Sports Brand support from ASICS
We are proud to see our athletes not just compete, but progress. Zenzile's journey is proof that when the process is trusted, the results follow.
Onwards to the ABSA Durban 10KM. The academy is behind you every step.

Before every session, I make it a point to break down every drill into clear, detailed instructions.
Why? Because ambiguity kills progress. When athletes know exactly what to do, how to do it, and why it matters — they execute with confidence and purpose.
Clear instructions eliminate guesswork, prevent injuries, and build trust. Your athletes shouldn't be decoding your words; they should be focusing on their performance.
Set the standard. Explain the detail. Watch them fly. 🏃♂️✨
