🧠 12 shocking things horse riders need to know about an unmanaged concussion!

1. A “minor knock” can be a traumatic brain injury. A concussion is a brain injury—not just a bump. Even if a rider “feels fine,” the brain has undergone chemical and structural stress that needs recovery time.

2. Riders often don’t lose consciousness. Up to 90% of concussions occur without being knocked out, which is why many riders underestimate the severity and get back on too soon.

3. Second Impact Syndrome can be fatal. If a rider takes another fall before fully recovering, they risk Second Impact Syndrome—a rapid and often fatal brain swelling that can occur within minutes.

4. Horse riding has a higher head injury risk than many extreme sports. Studies have shown equestrian activities can result in more hospital admissions for head injuries than sports like rugby or cycling—yet concussion protocols are often far less enforced.
