There’s a lot of debate about when is the right time to spay or neuter our pets, with some vets still recommending early procedures. However, new research shows that waiting until your dog is at least 2 years old (or even longer for larger breeds) can have big benefits for their health and development.
Why does timing matter?
Hormones play a crucial role in your dog’s growth. Early spaying/neutering can affect their growth plates, leading to potential joint problems, stunted growth, and even increased risks for certain cancers. Allowing your dog to mature naturally helps them develop properly – with stronger bones, a healthier coat, and a more balanced temperament.
There are also alternatives like vasectomies and ovary-sparing spays (OSS) that can prevent unwanted litters while keeping hormones intact and supporting healthy growth. These options can be done at any age and might be a better fit for some pets.

Stress usually builds slowly, layer by layer, until eventually the dog can’t cope anymore. By the time owners notice the barking, lunging, pulling, or “disobedience,” the dog has often been struggling long before that moment.
