KwaZulu Natal Chess had a great opportunity to host a National Coaches Program on 19-21 June 2026.

Chess South Africa is moving to a great direction to have accredited courses for coaches.

The programme was acilitated by Head Coach Reuben Salimu Chess ED whose vision is to share knowledge and help South African coaches to grow.

The 2-day FIDE Rated Chess Tournament, hosted by King Cetshwayo District on April 18-19, 2026, saw a limited number of players in attendance. Our team performed admirably, with Mlungisi Hlungwane, Amile Mawaba, and Uminathi Ndlovu securing top spots and receiving trophies and cash prizes. The participating players included Mr. Mkhwanazi, Dr. William, Fanele Gumede, Abonge Gumede, Lwazi Ntuli, and Akaziwe Sthole, who hails from Umkhanyakude. It's worth noting that 2 of these players are Richards Bay residents, currently studying at Mpangeni High School and Richards Bay Christian School and 6 from Khethani Christian School. The entire team is commended for their outstanding achievement.

Umkhanyakude Chess Association: Triumph at King Cetshwayo Open

Victory Across the Board
On February 28th, a determined squad of 13 players from the Umkhanyakude Chess Association traveled to compete in the prestigious King Cetshwayo Open Chess Tournament. Led by Mr. MI Mkhwanazi, Mrs. Mulholland, and Mr. Harvey Vaughan Williams, our players faced five intense rounds of strategic battle.
We are incredibly proud to announce that the team returned home with four major trophies, showcasing the incredible talent growing within our district.

UMKHANYAKUDE 2026 LEAGUE Kick-Off

The Umkhanyakude 2026 League has officially commenced, bringing together both schools and clubs for a highly anticipated season of competition.
Season Highlights
Opening Rounds: The league successfully launched its first three rounds ( 3 of 12) on February 5, 2026.
Host Venue: Khethani Christian School played host to these opening fixtures, providing a professional and spirited environment for the athletes.
Upcoming Action: The momentum continues next month as the league moves to Jozini. Joy House Private School is scheduled to host the next 3 rounds (6 of 12) on April 16, 2026.

This league remains a vital platform for scouting talent and fostering sportsmanship across the district’s school and club structures.
