Denver van der Bergh calls himself “a person in long-term recovery from alcohol addiction”. After struggling with addiction for 25 years, not only has he been sober for 5 years, but during this time worked hard to rebuild my life, going back to study and graduated cm laude with a degree in Business Administration.
Seemingly keen to take on touch challenges – he completed the 90 km Comrades Ultra-Marathon, which he sees as “a significant personal milestone”.
This year, he is pushing himself even further, taking on an even greater challenge with the aim of raising awareness and funds for those who cannot afford rehabilitation.
Denver will run 1680 km from Cape Town to Pietermaritzburg, over 35 days and then participate in the Comrades Marathon.

Denver will run 1680 km from Cape Town to Pietermaritzburg, over 35 days and then participate in the Comrades Marathon.

“My goal is to spread a message of hope, raise funds for addiction rehabilitation, and break the harmful stigmas surrounding addiction. Please consider supporting this meaningful cause and making a difference in the lives of those struggling with addiction. Together, we can give hope to those who need it most,” says Denver.

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧?
The Mossel Bay Municipality through its Directorate Community Services facilitates programmes and collaborates with other stakeholders to educate communities against substance abuse. During these successful campaigns, recognized by SALGA in 2024, various support services provided by relevant mandated parties including the Department of Social Development are taken directly to the communities where it is needed most. The municipality also facilitates and convenes the quarterly meetings of the Local Drug Action Committee (LDAC), providing services and support to those affected by substance dependency.
