With deep pride and respect, we congratulate our Head Instructor, Sensei Carel Van Der Westhuizen, on achieving his 7th Dan in Shorin‑Ryu Karate. This remarkable milestone reflects decades of dedication, discipline, and leadership. Sensei Carel’s guidance continues to inspire every student of Butokukan SA — reminding us that true mastery lies not only in technique, but in spirit, humility, and perseverance. We stand united in celebrating this achievement and look forward to the wisdom he will continue to share with our dojo family.

Sharpening Spirit Through Kobudo
From the Bo to the Nunchaku and Sai, our students stepped into the rich tradition of Okinawan weapons training with focus, discipline, and respect. This workshop wasn’t just about techniques — it was about building confidence, honoring tradition, and strengthening the bonds within our dojo family. Proud to see our karateka embrace the path of Kobudo with such enthusiasm and we are honored to be given such opportunities!

The Eku (or “boat oar”) in traditional Okinawan Shorin‑Ryu Kobudō is used much like a bo staff, but its paddle end adds unique striking, blocking, and tactical applications. It symbolizes Okinawan fishermen’s ingenuity, turning everyday tools into weapons for self‑defense.

Thought to have originated from China and or Taiwan, the sai were employed by local authorities as an effective means of restraining and or striking. It was not uncommon for one or more sai to have been concealed to replace one that had been thrown at an opponent. The sai has always been a weapon having never been adapted from farming implements or tool use.
