Hello Cycling Humans! This page has been quiet for too long now. Is there anyone out there, anyone whose toes are twitching to get out on the road and make the Mass?? I am a million miles away, cycling a different road, but where there is collective will there is a Critical Mass. so does anyone want to ride soon?
Critical Mass Port Elizabeth
"I want to ride my Bicycle!" Critical Mass PE started at the end of October 2012. It is a mixed bunch of people, all are welcome.
"I want to ride my bicycle!"
Critical Mass is a global movement of cyclists who get together to promote safe cycling, to create a city cycling community and help people engage with their city by bike. Lycra is not a prerequisite, wear what you are comfortable in - shorts, mini skirt, jeans, fancy dress....
It is by definition an unorganized ride, it is organic and changes with the people who join,

"Biking -- as with walking -- offers a prime example of the power of crowds. As more people bike and walk, cycling and pedestrian fatalities actually decline. That's because the more people bike and walk, the more drivers become attuned to their presence (either on sidewalks or road shoulders), and the more cities are likely to invest in the kind of infrastructure explicitly meant to protect them (all of which further encourages more cyclists and pedestrians)."

Ok, I can see that working, but what causes such appalling driving in South Africa? Why are pedestrian and car passenger fatalities so high here? What could a group of cyclists do to change this?
Actually, cyclists make city streets safer Cycling fatalities decline as more people bike. The same is true for pedestrians.

Yeah! This is brilliant!
"On safety, Meghan has a great philosophy: “one of the main reasons why I am cycling around in the first place is to really try to unpack my own internal perceptions of fear based living in Johannesburg. I feel that the more I explore, the more I understand what should be feared and what should not. And so far, without a doubt, I can say that there is more to not be fearful of than there is to fear. This knowledge is quite liberating, but it is one that has to be explored and understood individually. Everyone has their own levels of self they are working through and I think it is important to always feel safe.”
Women who ride! Gender and commuter cycling in Johannesburg Popular wisdom has it that it is not that safe “out there” on the streets of Johannesburg for women. But a recent upswell in the numbers of women trying commuter cycling in Jozi, and…

So we are currently working on finding/building a bike trailer so we can have some music as we roll... Best option no.1, quite possibly no. 2 ( actually Dave has leant us some fantastic equipment if we can just get it something suitable to ride in....) and it will probably end up looking like no.3
Please, does anyone here has a bike trailer for the Sunday Critical Mass?

Brilliant work...
"THANK YOU to all the amazing Femmechanics who attended the first Grrrease Time Open Shop/Workshop time at the Bikes Not Bombs Retail Bicycle Shop yesterday! We learned about brakes, changed out a drive train, trued wheels, tracked down slow leaks, adjusted a rear derailleur, fine tuned seat angles, replaced brake pads and rebuilt a wheel!"
