🔖 Protecting livestock starts with proper identification.

On 21 and 22 September 2026, RMIS Animal Health Technicians (AHTs) and Livestock Technical Advisors (LTAs) worked alongside cattle farmers from the Machipe community in Limpopo during a practical livestock branding intervention.

Over two days, approximately 150 cattle were branded, giving farmers valuable hands-on experience in livestock identification and compliance with the Animal Identification Act (Act 6 of 2002). Young, farm-ready calves were also tattooed as part of the identification process.

The intervention focused on more than just branding livestock. Through practical skills transfer, farmers gained the knowledge and confidence to continue to correctly identify and manage their future herds.
Proper livestock identification plays a vital role in traceability, responsible livestock ownership, and efforts to combat stock theft.

By building skills at community level, RMIS is helping farmers strengthen herd management and protect the value of their livestock.

What is knowledge without practical experience? 🐂🐑🐐

A successful 3-day Animal Husbandry Training was completed in Mkhuhlu, Bushbuckridge, facilitated by RMIS Livestock Technical Advisors Frans Dolamo (LTA) and Hendrick Moche (AHT), in collaboration with the Department of Agriculture.

The training combined theory with practical hands-on experience, including safe livestock handling and brand-marking to strengthen herd identification and support efforts against stock theft.

A big thank you to the Bushbuckridge farmers for their passion, commitment and willingness to learn, and to Mr Sekgobela L.N.K and his team for their support and coordination. 👏🏾🤝🏾

Success in livestock farming is not about owning more cattle. It's about managing them better.

As part of African Farming Farmers Day 2026, RMIS participated in a two-day farmer capacity-building programme in Limpopo, engaging farmers in the Greater Giyani and Collins Chabane municipalities.

RMIS Livestock Technical Advisor, Ashell Maenetja, presented on Understanding the Principles of Profitable Herd Management, highlighting practical approaches to herd health, production management, record-keeping, and farm administration.

The sessions encouraged farmers to view livestock farming as a business, focusing on productivity, reproductive performance, resource utilisation, cost control, and informed decision-making.

A key message shared was that the success of a livestock enterprise is not measured by herd size alone, but by how effectively livestock are managed to deliver sustainable returns.

Through initiatives like these, RMIS continues to support farmers with practical knowledge that strengthens productivity, resilience, and long-term sustainability.

Bringing practical livestock skills to the heart of the Kalahari.

Farmers from across the Kalahari region gathered in Welkom, near the Botswana-Namibia border, for a successful Basic Herd Management Training presented by RMIS. A total of 24 farmers attended the training, eager to gain practical knowledge that is often difficult to access in remote farming areas.

RMIS Livestock Technical Advisor, John Matsoso, facilitated the session, which focused on key livestock management topics, including handling facilities (handling pens), herd management, dehorning, and livestock marketing.

Participants expressed their appreciation to RMIS for the opportunity, noting that training and information do not always reach farmers in this part of the Northern Cape. The event provided valuable insights that can help producers improve animal management practices and make more informed farming decisions.

RMIS remains committed to bringing practical, farmer-focused training to livestock producers across South Africa, ensuring that knowledge reaches even the most remote farming communities.

Imagine finishing your Master's degree and walking straight into a role that uses exactly what you've spent years studying.

That is the reality for Mpho Digasoa.

After recently completing his Master's degree in Genetics, Mpho Digasoa has stepped straight into a role where he can apply his knowledge to one of the most exciting livestock projects in the country.

Mpho joined RMIS as an intern and is now contributing to the Beef Genomics Project (BGP), the largest genome mapping project in the South African livestock industry.

A special thank you to Mastercard Foundation for funding the internship and helping create opportunities for the next generation of agricultural professionals.

It's a rare opportunity and a fantastic example of how education, industry, and opportunity can come together to create meaningful career pathways for young professionals.
