REQUEST FOR ACADEMIC CLOSURE IN NORTHERN BAHR EL GHAZAL

Quick Press shares a formal request letter written by Piol Agany Thiep, a third-year student at the University of Bahr el Ghazal, calling for a one-month academic closure across Northern Bahr El Ghazal State.

Date: 29 June 2026

In his respectful appeal to the Honorable Minister of Education, Republic of South Sudan, Piol highlighted concerns over the current situation within the state, noting that the ongoing operations by Caterpillar have created an environment that may not be safe or suitable for learners.

He urged the Ministry to give urgent attention to the matter and consider granting a temporary academic break to safeguard the well-being of students.

This thoughtful request reflects the voice of a concerned student advocating for safety, care, and a better learning environment for all.

Why North Korea and South Korea Were Divided: The History Behind the Korean Peninsula
At the end of World War II in 1945, Korea had been under Japanese rule for 35 years. After Japan's surrender, the peninsula was temporarily divided along the 38th Parallel.

The Soviet Union occupied the north.

The United States occupied the south.

The original plan was to reunify Korea after a short period, but growing tensions between the Soviet Union and the United States during the Cold War made that impossible.

In 1948, two separate governments were established:

🇰🇵 North Korea (Democratic People's Republic of Korea) under Kim Il-sung, backed by the Soviet Union.

🇰🇷 South Korea (Republic of Korea) under Syngman Rhee, supported by the United States.

Both governments claimed to be the legitimate ruler of the entire Korean Peninsula.

The Korean War (1950–1953)

On 25 June 1950, North Korea invaded South Korea, triggering the Korean War.

The United Nations, led mainly by the United States, supported South Korea.

China entered the war in support of North Korea, while the Soviet Union provided military equipment and assistance.

After three years of intense fighting, an armistice was signed on 27 July 1953. However, no peace treaty was ever signed.

Why Are They Still Divided?

The war ended with a ceasefire, not peace. Today, North and South Korea remain separated by the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), one of the world's most heavily fortified borders.

Although they share the same history, language, and culture, they developed into two very different countries:

🇰🇵 North Korea: A one-party authoritarian state with a centrally planned economy.

🇰🇷 South Korea: A democratic nation with one of the world's largest and most advanced economies.

More than 70 years later, the Korean Peninsula remains divided, making it one of the longest-lasting geopolitical conflicts in modern history.
