The Military Skills Development System is a two-year voluntary service system with the long term goal of enhancing the SA National Defence Force’s deployment capability.

What is the URTP?
The University Reserve Training Programme (URTP) is a programme whereby undergraduate and postgraduate university students enroll as Reserve Force (Part-time) members of the SANDF and undergo military training.
Recruitment for the URTP takes place on the campuses of various identified Tertiary Institutions. On completion of the URTP members are then appointed as junior leaders in the SANDF. They may be utilized in the military in terms of their professional qualification or not, depending on their preference.

Defence Reserves Unveil New University Graduates
On Tuesday 21 January, the Defence Reserves – the part-time component of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) unveiled one hundred and four (104) graduates of its University Reserve Training Programme (URTP) selected from six universities in the Gauteng and North West provinces in a military parade held at Regiment Mooirivier in Potchefstroom.
The URTP is a military training programme implemented by the SANDF aimed at enhancing the intellectual and leadership capabilities of the Reserve Force of the SANDF.
The recruits who successfully complete their military training and academic courses will be appointed as junior officers in the SANDF. Their military careers will be developed in accordance with a unique part-time training programme offering them the opportunity to follow both a civilian and military career.
