HUNTING THE CAPE BUFFALO

Hunting the Cape Buffalo, often called “Black Death,” is one of Africa’s greatest and most intense hunting experiences. Known for its massive build, unpredictable temperament, and incredible tenacity Cape Buffalo have the ability to soak up punishment from even the hardest hitting rifles. The Cape Buffalo commands a deep respect from seasoned hunters and Professional Hunters alike.

One of the most prolific members of Africa's dangerous game and Big 5 animals, Buffalo are often the species that are chosen to start a hunters dangerous game career.

Stalking these large bovines in the thick bush requires patience, and nerves of steel. Every step taken on the spoor brings an adrenaline rush, your senses sharpen as the smell of dust, Buffalo pats, and wild Africa fills the air. When the Dagga bull finally emerges, the sight of heavy bosses and sweeping horns is enough to make any hunter’s heart pound.

A perfectly placed shot is essential, but even then, the hunt may be far from over. The Cape Buffalo is famous for absorbing punishment and fighting back with vengeful tenacity. This is the ultimate test of your skill as a hunter, composure, and an abundant respect for Africa's dangerous game. An encounter with a large Cape Buffalo bull will be remembered long after the dust settles.

When Eric boarded his flight to South Africa, he had one thing in mind — hunting a mature Limpopo Nyala bull. What he didn’t know was that his dream hunt would turn into an example of hunting safari success.

After several hours of combing the riverine bush, and passing on younger bulls, patience finally paid off. Deep in the Limpopo bushveld, Eric and his PH's spotted a lone bull — heavy-bodied, thick-shouldered, and wearing a good set of ivory-tipped horns.

With perfect shot placement and steady nerves, Eric brought down a true Limpopo trophy. This bull wasn’t just a good trophy — it was the reward for persistence, precision, and ethical hunting in one of South Africa’s most beautiful provinces.

Well done, Eric! A mature Nyala bull taken in the bushveld is something any hunter would be proud of. Safe travels back home, and thank you for choosing Black Horn Safaris.

Measuring the Horns of a big trophy Kudu Bull
What do you think this Kudu measured - Put your answer in the comments.

Join us as we measure a big mature Kudu bull.
The two most common measuring methods used in Africa are the Rowland Ward method and The SCI (Safari Club International) measuring method.
Most animals on a hunting Safari are judged for trophy quality on the RW system.

Rowland Ward (RW) – “Longest Horn Wins”

Stand the cleaned skull upright.

Identify the longer horn.

Using a flexible tape, start measuring from the lowest point on the ridge and follow the spiral up to the horn tip.

Keep the tape snuggly on the curve of the horn.

Record the single length. (RW records only the longest horn for Greater Kudu.)

The RW minimum for entry into the record book is 54 inches.

Safari Club International (SCI) – “Total Horn lengths and bases”

Measure both horns exactly as above and log each length.

Take a base circumference on each horn at the widest point just above the start of the ridge.

Add the four numbers (L + L + C + C). The total of these measurements is the SCI score.

Minimum for entry into the SCI record book is 121

KUDU - THE LAST LIGHT BULL

There are hunts… and then there are moments that etch themselves into your soul forever.

After some hours spent patiently waiting, he finally walked out at last light. A giant kudu bull - ancient, wise, and one of the bushvelds true monarchs. As the shadows stretched long across the Limpopo brush, he appeared like a ghost in the dusk.

One clean, ethical shot, he expired within seconds. Hunting honors our deep respect for the animals and their environment.

This wasn’t just about pulling the trigger and taking a life. It was about patience, precision, and honoring the animal every step of the way. Every ounce of meat was utilized. Nothing wasted.

This is how we hunt. This is why we hunt.

Respect the land. Respect the animal. Respect our hunting tradition.

A MASSIVE OLD 47" CAPE BUFFALO HUNT WITH A RAVIN R26 CROSSBOW

In the heart of Southern Africa’s Limpopo bushveld, a dangerous game hunt just rewrote the playbook.

This wasn’t your typical Cape Buffalo dangerous game hunt. Known as “Africa's Black Death” for their raw aggression and ability to charge with little warning, Cape Buffalo are traditionally hunted with large-caliber rifles due to their size, toughness, and the extreme danger they pose.

On this hunt, the hunter decided to push the Ravin R26 crossbow to it's limits.

The hunter opted to use a Ravin crossbow together with a razor sharp cut on contact broadhead . What followed was a textbook ex*****on of precision, patience, and ethical hunting.

At 25 yards, the crossbow delivered a perfect double-lung pass-through. The old buffalo bull dropped quickly and cleanly. No long tracking job, no prolonged suffering. Just quiet, controlled efficiency, the kind that only comes from deep respect for the animal and a deep trust in your equipment.

All meat was recovered and fully utilized, honoring the animal and the land it came from. There was no waste. No shortcuts.

This dangerous game hunt was about testing modern hunting technology in one of the most unforgiving situations on Earth and proving that when done responsibly, archery gear like the Ravin crossbow can be not just capable, but ethical and highly effective.

An ethical Cape Buffalo hunt with a crossbow is a relatively rare occurrence.
