There’s something pretty special about riding Chappies, with the winding road, mountains and those incredible views across Hout Bay.

But then again, we’re pretty spoilt for choice in the Cape. Whether you’re riding around Pringle Bay, heading out from Cape Town to Chappies and back, or just enjoying a morning coffee ride to Melkbosstrand, there’s something so awesome about each ride!

Different routes, different scenery, but all good reasons to get out on the bike. And a reminder of just how blessed we are to have these roads on our doorstep.

Storms River Mouth | Tsitsikamma National Park

One of our favourite places along South Africa’s Garden Route, and certainly somewhere worth taking the time to explore.

Storms River Mouth is where the indigenous forests of Tsitsikamma meet the Indian Ocean. Rugged cliffs, beautiful coastal scenery and the famous suspension bridges make this one of the Garden Route’s most spectacular destinations.

An interesting bit of history: the Tsitsikamma Marine Protected Area was established in 1964, making it one of Africa’s oldest marine protected areas. More than 60 years later, it remains an important part of South Africa’s marine conservation efforts.

As we look ahead to 2027, we’re excited to introduce more Ride & Explore tours. Cycling will always be at the heart of what we do, but we’re looking forward to spending less time chasing kilometres and more time discovering the places, people and experiences that make South Africa so special.

And places like Storms River Mouth are exactly why we’re excited about what’s ahead!

Seven Passes Road | Garden Route

There’s a reason we keep coming back to this part of South Africa.

Seven Passes Road winds its way between George and Knysna through indigenous forest, farmland, rivers and deep gorges. It’s beautiful country to explore at any speed, but on a bicycle you really get to take it all in.

Our introduction to it was fairly memorable. Straight out of the hotel and into gradients touching 22% before the legs had much chance to wake up! From there the road kept rolling, but with scenery like this, nobody was complaining. It was also only the beginning, with Outeniqua Pass still waiting for us later that morning.

The road has a pretty remarkable history too. The seven passes were engineered by Thomas Bain and his brother-in-law Adam de Smidt in the 1800s, and today the route and its historic bridges are recognised as a national monument.

It’s places like this that make the Garden Route one of our favourite parts of South Africa to explore by bicycle.

Is there a best road or area to ride in South Africa?

We’ve been lucky enough to ride some incredible roads around the country. Mountain passes, long stretches through the Karoo, quiet farm roads and routes like this where the mountain drops straight into the ocean.

It’s one of the things we love most about cycling in South Africa. There is always another road to discover and another part of the country that looks completely different from the last.

We still have a long list of roads we want to ride.

There’s always time for a group photo!

The riding is magical, but tour life is about so much more than the kilometres on the bike. It’s the photo stops, the laughs at the water points, the jokes while a tyre gets changed and the conversations that continue long after the bikes have been packed away.

Tour life is difficult to explain. It’s a feeling. You can arrive not knowing anyone and leave a few days later with 10 new friends, a WhatsApp group that never stops buzzing and plenty of stories to take home.

It’s often these moments in between that we remember most.

We will never host a tour without the Think Bike Marshals by our side. The Garden Route Tour 2027 is no different. With the marshals with the group for the entire journey, from PE to Cape Town, you can cycle feeling a lot safer on the road.

Some roads are really worth travelling across the country for.

South Africa has no shortage of them. Mountain passes that test your legs, quiet valleys where you can ride for kilometres without seeing another cyclist, and roads that remind you why you fell in love with cycling in the first place. Just you, vast scenery and the sound of your hub spinning.

That’s why we started Drake Cycle Tours. Every tour gives us the opportunity to introduce our guests to another corner of this incredible country. We take care of the planning, support and logistics so they can simply enjoy the ride.

People often ask what makes a Drake Cycle Tour different.

It’s not one thing - It’s the hundreds of small things that happen throughout the day that most guests never even notice.

Routes that have been ridden before. Luggage waiting at the hotel. A support team nearby. Think Bike marshals keeping the group safe. Stops that are there when you need them.

None of those things are particularly exciting on their own, but together they allow our guests to relax and enjoy what they came for.

This is what we love about this photo. One of our international guests, Alexia, enjoying the road, knowing there’s a team looking after everything else.
