It’s a privilege to be working with colleagues in Stellenbosch this week - community action towards safer public spaces.

Today, on this National Women’s Day, we reflect on the strength, compassion, love, and indomitable spirit of the women of South Africa. Through decades of fighting for freedom while simultaneously navigating the daily struggles of family life, these women have shown incredible resilience. We honor the mothers and mother figures who wiped our tears and gave us the wind beneath our wings, the women who have nurtured us, and the mothers we have become. We pay tribute to the Gogo’s - with aching hips and joints from decades of toiling for us—who watch over us with the wisdom etched in the folds of their all-seeing eyes.

Today and every day, we honor you, we thank you, and we are forever grateful for you.

Sometimes, not always, a public space can be made a little safer for short periods through activations - eThekwini’s Victoria Park (South Beach) public space activities today by - a collaboration with eThekwini Municipality colleagues which we have the privilege to work with.

We LLLLOOOOVVVVE South African public spaces! So much to embrace, so much to do, so much to learn!

Survey results sharing with the community of the View Setttlement in Ophirton, study conducted in November looking at alternative energy solutions for informal settlements in Johannesburg.

Team Sticky training community field workers to conduct qualitative & quantitative research for an alternative energy pilot project in settlements. Our team are so privileged to do work that we are passionate about with talented and equally passionate colleagues.

Acknowledging the incredibly institutionalised nature of the design of these community centre outdoor toilet basins, taps needed fixing, so team Sticky fixed taps.….

In the 1980’s Mr Spoon Khalimba’s home was a popular relaxation spot for people to unwind - Spoon’s Shebeen became famous and over the years he collected photographs of the people that visited (some quite famous) - now on display at Orlando@91.

Spoons had been a soccer player for Orlando Pirates, an actor in movies such as Mampuru, and was said to have a personality that lit up a room when he walked in .

Orlando East is FULL of places of heritage and deep historic moments - this map shows a few of the blue heritage plaque locations.

Blue Plaques can be significant moments for some families, in a way it is seen by some as an official acknowledgement; people, places, moments and struggles.

Orlando East has quite a few Cultural Activists who would be delighted to take you through the Orlando@91 exhibition and a tour to some of these locations!

The blue plaques are produced by the Directorate of Arts, Culture and Heritage together with the foundation.
