On Thursday, 22 January 2026, Thato Moetji and Sagwadi Mathe, two Grade 12 girl learners from Hoërskool Vanderbijlpark, sadly succumbed to injuries sustained in the unfortunate scholar transport incident that took place on Monday, 19 January 2026, in Vanderbijlpark, which also claimed the lives of 12 of their fellow learners who were on board.

Their lives, bright and full of promise, touched their schools, families, and communities in ways that will be forever remembered.

We honour the lives of Thato Moetji and Sagwadi Mathe, whose light and promise were taken far too soon. We are deeply disheartened by their loss. May their memory shine on forever as a solemn and enduring reminder of the hope, joy, and potential they carried in their hearts.

Banyana Banyana’s government incentive for their recent Women’s Africa Cup of Nations triumph has been bumped up from 5.8-million to R15-million by President Cyril Ramaphosa, Minister Nathi Mthethwa announced on Tuesday.
