Happy New Year, everyone! Get ready for an exhilarating 2024, brimming with excitement and growth!

WUKF affiliated members, brace yourselves for an extraordinary year ahead. We're breaking boundaries as some of our dojos are now proudly double affiliated, directly partnering with other martial art federations such as NMA-ISKA, FCMA, Shinbukan Ryu Kyu Kobudo, and more. The WUKF Western Cape has been on fire, and we're thrilled to share some incredible updates about our phenomenal progress.

Firstly, a massive shoutout to each one of you for your unwavering support and dedication. WUKF Western Cape has now emerged as the largest All Style Karate & Kobudo federation in the Western Cape, boasting a network of 6 national federations, 25 dojos, and over 1000 engaged students. And guess what? The growth doesn't stop here; we're expecting more federations to join the ride this year!

Secondly, mark your calendars because the Cape Classic and Destiny are making a grand comeback. Destiny is confirmed for the weekend of 27 – 29th September 2024 in Stellenbosch, and we're eagerly awaiting the Cape Classic date confirmation.

Thirdly, brace yourselves for the inaugural WUKF Southern Africa Championship in Windhoek, Namibia, later this year. Exciting news – WUKF is now a proud member of the International School Sport Federation (ISF), enabling our affiliated members to compete at the International School Sport Games recognised by the IOC.

Hold on, there's more! The 2024 WUKF SA National Championship & Afro-Asia Open is gearing up to be legendary. Seven countries, including the USA, France, and Scotland, have already registered, promising a fierce competition with an expected turnout of 800 – 1000 competitors.

This extraordinary growth puts us in a formidable position to make a splash in upcoming tournaments. Together, let's contribute to the success of each event, crafting unforgettable experiences for our participants. We understand that not everyone can attend every tournament, but there are plenty of chances for our students to gain valuable tatami time in the competitive arena.

Looking ahead, we have an electrifying lineup of WUKF, MASA, and other tournaments, ranging from local and regional to international competitions. Quick overview:

Local & Regional: 20
Provincial: 2
National & Continental: 2
International: 2
Worlds: 2

To kickstart the year, our next WUKF WC Ref, Judge, Coach & Table Official course is set for Saturday, 3 February 2024, starting at 08:30 at Brackenfell Shotokan Karate Academy. Let's prioritize attendance and continue building our expertise.

Here's to an epic start to the year filled with growth, success, and positive energy! 🥋✨

🗣️ Special Award: WUKF South Africa

The WUKF was proud to present Sensei Gary Grapentin with a special award recognising his contribution to our organisation in South Africa.

Roy O’Kane, on behalf of the WUKF Executive Committee:

“Gary is an outstanding ambassador for the WUKF and has played a critical role in driving the organisation forward. It is with pleasure we recognise his contribution.”

The presentation took place at this year’s WUKF South Africa National Championships & Africa Open which was held at the Boardwalk Hotel's prestigious International Convention Centre in Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth) over 31 March to 2 April.

VIP Guests in attendance included Councillor M.B Kamana, the MMC for Sports, Recreation, Arts and Culture for Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality and Roy O'Kane - WUKF Executive Committee Member and Chief Operating Officer.

The Championship attracted 15 WUKF affiliated Southern African Federations with a combined total of 600 competitors and 1200 individual entries.

Categories on offer included Kata, Kumite, Inclusive Kata and Combat, Kobudo Long/Short Weapons and the WUKFs signature Shobu Sanbon Rotational Team Kumite. For the first time in South Africa, WUKF Shobu Ippon Rotational Team Kumite was also included on the programme.

The Championship catered for children from 6yrs of age to adult veterans and included novice, intermediate and elite categories.

The Championship met with WUKF SA's vision of "Karate for All" ensuring the event was affordable and accessible.

Above all was the spirit, camaraderie and friendship which permeated the entire event - this exemplifies the true essence of WUKF and WUKF SA.

Two weeks to go before the WUKF SA National Championships & Africa Open (31st March - 2nd April). Looking forward to welcoming all Competitors, Officials, VIP's and Spectators to this prestigious event.

Just over a month away from the 2023 WUKF South Africa National Championships & Africa Open. The Championship will take place at the International Convention Centre at the Boardwalk Hotel in Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth) from the 31st March to the 2nd April. Looking forward to welcoming all VIPs, athletes, officials and spectators to this prestigious event. For further info Gary Grapentin may be contacted at [email protected].

I would like to reassure all WUKF karateka, families, and supporters that WUKF remains committed to making our events as accessible to as many South African karateka as possible.

For the forthcoming WUKF SA National Championships (31 March – 2nd April, Gqeberha), novice and intermediate competitors are required to have a single dogi/gi (which may be used for both kata and kumite categories), one pair of mitts (red or white) and a clear or white gumshield. In addition to the above, elite karateka are required to have a set of red and white mitts. Shin pads, chest protectors and head gear (for children) remain optional and red and white belts are provided at each floor. No competitor will ever be turned away from a WUKF event due to an ill-fitting dogi/gi.

This is not only in recognition of the harsh financial situation which many South African families face, but also a reminder as to the important role which karate facilitates in bringing together competitors from diverse backgrounds.

– Gary Grapentin (WUKF Liaison for South Africa)

It is my privilege to invite South African and International WUKF affiliated Federations to the 2023 WUKF South Africa Championship & Africa Open.

Building on this year's success, the Championship will return to the splendid Boardwalk Hotel and International Convention Centre in Gqeberha (previously Port Elizabeth) which is situated on Marine Drive directly opposite Hobie Beach and Shark Rock Pier.

The Championship carries the full-support and endorsement of WUKF President, Prof. Dr Liviu Crisan and his Executive Committee.

Not only will the Championship consolidate the friendship and camaraderie between WUKF affiliates in South Africa and abroad, but it will also serve as an excellent showcase event for WUKF Karate in this Country. The Championship will play a pivotal role with assisting selected athletes in their preparations for the 11th WUKF World Championship in Dundee, Scotland in July 2023.

The luxurious championship venue (2000 square metres) will comprise eight tatami floors, each with comfortable seating for spectators and air-conditioning. In addition, the championship experience will provide the opportunity for athletes, officials, their families, and supporters of WUKF karate to enjoy an unforgettable experience at this incredible destination.

East Cape Shotokan-Ryu’s Organising Committee has decades of experience in staging large scale championship events and we are committed to delivering an enjoyable and professional Championship. We look forward to welcoming you to the Eastern Cape. - Gary Grapentin (WUKF Liaison for South Africa and Organiser of the 2023 WUKF SA National Championships & Africa Open).
