NEXT SEASON TO START FROM SEPTEMBER TO DECEMBER
Mike Jovic Mwendachabe ✍️
A proposal has been presented before the FAZ Council to move Zambian football away from the current August-May calendar to a new March-November cycle due to climate change concerns.
Under the proposal, there will be a transitional short season running from September 2026 to December 2026 before the full March-November calendar officially begins in March 2027.
The transition season is expected to feature 20 teams in each division, split into two groups of 10 based on final league standings. Teams that finish in odd-numbered positions would form one group, while those in even-numbered positions would form the other, with matches played on a home-and-away basis.
A final playoff between the two group winners may also be introduced, while promotion and relegation could either be limited or temporarily suspended during the transition period.
Key proposals before Council:
• Shift from the August-May calendar to March-November
• Transitional season to run from September to December 2026
• 20 teams per division split into two groups of 10
• Promotion and relegation may be suspended or reduced during transition
