LUSAKA HOSTS SUCCESSFUL AREA BOARD ATHLETICS COMPETITION

LUSAKA, 25 April 2026 — The Lusaka Province Athletics Area Board today staged a successful Area Board Competition at Edwin Emboela Stadium, attracting participation from more than ten athletics clubs within the Province.
The competition drew the presence of Zambia Athletics President, Major Bernard Bwalya, who attended in an observational capacity, alongside Secretary General Teddy Shimishi.
Speaking to the media during the event, Major Bwalya commended Lusaka Province for its active inclusion of community clubs, describing the approach as vital to the development of athletics in Zambia. He emphasised the need to strengthen grassroots structures through initiatives such as Catch Them Young, noting that early talent identification remains central to building a competitive national team.
He further called on corporate partners to support Area Boards across the country in order to enhance athlete development systems.
Also speaking at the event, the Chairman for LilayinAthletics Academy Mr. Kennedy Mubanga highlighted the importance of identifying and nurturing young talent at community level. He praised Lusaka Province for its deliberate efforts in engaging clubs, stating that such platforms provide young athletes with the exposure and experience needed to progress in the sport. He added that consistent competition at this level will ensure a steady pipeline of talent capable of succeeding elite athletes such as Muzala Samukonga.
Meanwhile, Lusaka Province Athletics Area Board Chairman, Mr. Kamanda Kasopa, expressed appreciation to Zambia Athletics leadership, particularly President Major Bernard Bwalya, for their continued support and presence at the event.
The competition represents a significant step in reinforcing grassroots athletics development and highlights Lusaka Province’s commitment to nurturing future national athletes.
