Hospital Warns Over High Blood Pressure

The Levy Mwanawasa University Teaching Hospital says 40 out of every 60 patients seen at the facility present with elevated blood pressure, making hypertension a major public health concern.

Hospital Senior Resident Medical Officer CHRISTABEL NAMUKONDE says hypertension is increasingly common in outpatient departments and often goes undetected until serious complications arise.

Dr. NAMUKONDE identified major risk factors as high salt intake, smoking, nsunko use — the sniffing of raw to***co, excess weight, lack of exercise and family history.

Speaking to ZNBC News in Lusaka as the world marks World Hypertension Day, Dr. NAMUKONDE said early screening is critical in preventing severe complications.

She said many patients only discover the condition during routine health checks.

For those diagnosed, Dr. NAMUKONDE said medication combined with regular monitoring can help manage the condition.

She urged patients to adopt lifestyle changes, including reducing salt intake, exercising regularly and maintaining a healthy weight.

Dr. NAMUKONDE said hypertension can be controlled through early detection and proper management.
