HICHILEMA HAS PARDONED 1,505 INMATES
President Hakainde Hichilema has exercised his prerogative of mercy on 1,505 inmates ahead of Africa Freedom Day celebrations scheduled for tomorrow.
Of the total number, 708 inmates have been released, while 797 others have had their sentences commuted to terminable sentences.
The presidential pardon was granted in accordance with Article 97 of the Constitution, which empowers the Head of State to pardon convicted persons or substitute severe punishments.
Among the 708 inmates released are 700 ordinary inmates, two women inmates with circumstantial children, one senior citizen, and five convicted foreign nationals.
Home Affairs Permanent Secretary Dickson Matembo announced the development in a ministerial statement issued to ZNBC News.
Mr Matembo said the presidential pardon and remission of sentences form part of government measures aimed at reducing congestion in correctional facilities across the country.
He added that government is also addressing overcrowding through the construction and expansion of existing correctional centres.
Mr Matembo further appealed to families and communities to welcome former inmates back into society and avoid discriminating against them.
He warned that rejection and neglect often push former inmates back into criminal activities, leading to reoffending and eventual return to correctional facilities.
Meanwhile, Mr Matembo disclosed that government has procured new combat uniforms for officers under the Zambia Correctional Service in a move aimed at boosting morale among officers.
He said the new uniforms are expected to be launched in July 2026.
Mr Matembo also revealed that government is exploring ways to speed up the recruitment of officers to help address manpower challenges within the Zambia Correctional Service.

President Hakainde Hichilema shares:
Fellow Zambians,
This afternoon, alongside our running mate, Her Honour the Republican Vice President, Mrs. Mutale W.K. Nalumango, we successfully filed our nomination papers as we seek re-election on August 13.
We seek re-election mindful that leadership is a call to service, sacrifice, and duty to country.
A few years ago, our nation faced division, economic hardship, and uncertainty. Many had lost hope. Yet through resilience, unity, and Godβs grace, Zambia is rising again. Peace, order, and confidence have returned. Jobs, investment, and opportunity are growing. Free education and local development are changing lives in every community.
But progress alone is not enough. We must protect the values that define us.
Peace is our greatest inheritance. Zambia has endured because we chose unity over hatred, dialogue over violence, and country over self. This legacy must never be sacrificed to division, tribalism, corruption, or political bickering.
This election must not divide us. It must strengthen our democracy and unite our people. Let us reject violence, arrogance, and toxic politics. Let us choose leadership rooted in integrity, compassion, service, and results.
To every citizen: Zambia belongs to all of us. Together, we will keep building a peaceful, inclusive, and prosperous nation β where every person lives with dignity, hope, and opportunity.
Let us move forward together as One Zambia, One Nation, One People.
May God bless you all, and may God bless the Republic of Zambia.
Hakainde Hichilema
President of the Republic of Zambia.

DRAMATIC CHEELO GROWS FEET, WITHDRAWS FROM PARLIAMENTARY RACE
Independent Monze East aspiring parliamentary candidate Victor Cheelo has withdrawn his candidature and pledged support for the United Party for National Development (UPND) adopted candidate Jack Mwiimbu and President Hakainde Hichilema ahead of this yearβs elections.
Byta FM Monze based Journalist reports that speaking during a press briefing held in Lusaka, Cheelo said his decision to step down was aimed at promoting unity and strengthening support for the ruling party in the constituency.
Cheelo stated that he will now focus on mobilising support and campaigning for President Hichilema and Mwiimbu in order to help the UPND secure more votes during the elections.
Meanwhile, Monze East parliamentary candidate Jack Mwiimbu expressed gratitude to Cheelo for what he described as a bold and selfless decision.
Mwiimbu said the move demonstrates political maturity and a shared commitment towards ensuring victory for President Hichilema and the UPND in the upcoming elections.
He noted that there is need for members and supporters of the ruling party to work hand in hand and remain united as the opposition continues to regroup in an attempt to unseat President Hichilema.
Mwiimbu further urged party members in Monze East and across the country to intensify campaigns and maintain unity ahead of the polls, saying collective efforts will be key in securing victory for the President and the ruling party.
