Makhandeni Pirates Crowned Emakhandeni-Luveve Under-25 Champions

MAKHOSI Ground in Gwabalanda was the centre of excitement over the weekend as Makhandeni Pirates emerged champions of the Emakhandeni-Luveve Under-25 Football Tournament after defeating Luveve FC 5-4 on penalties following a goalless draw in the final.

The tournament, organised by Emakhandeni-Luveve Constituency MP Hon Discent Collins Bajila, brought together six youth teams from Emakhandeni, Lobengula, Luveve and Gwabalanda, providing a platform for young footballers to showcase their talent and compete for honours.

Makhandeni Pirates booked their place in the final after a dominant display in Group One. The Pirates began their campaign with a convincing 2-0 victory over Emakhandeni SDA before overcoming Seza Academy 2-0 in a decisive group encounter.

Seza Academy had earlier opened their tournament with a comfortable 3-0 win over Emakhandeni SDA, but their hopes of reaching the final were dashed by Makhandeni Pirates' perfect record. The Pirates finished top of the group with six points, while Seza Academy settled for second place.

In Group Two, Luveve FC emerged as the strongest side after recording back-to-back 1-0 victories over Tshaka Juniors. Their final group match against Gwabalanda FC ended in a 1-1 draw, forcing a penalty shootout to determine the group winner. Luveve FC held their nerve to win 5-4 on penalties and secure a place in the championship match.

The third-place playoff, played at Chigumira Shops, saw Gwabalanda FC edge Seza Academy 2-1 to claim the bronze medal position.

The final at Makhosi Ground produced a tense and closely contested affair. Despite several chances created by both teams, neither Makhandeni Pirates nor Luveve FC could find the breakthrough during regulation time.

With the scores locked at 0-0, the championship was decided from the penalty spot. Makhandeni Pirates converted five of their penalties, while Luveve FC scored four, handing the Pirates the tournament title.

The Tournament also had Community Awards which were not directly linked to sports. Luveve Juniors won the HIV Awareness Award after mobilising the highest number of supporters to get tested for HIV. Meanwhile Seza Academy took the People’s Choice Award. The People’s Choice Award was for a team which got the highest number of votes in the Constituency WhatsApp Channel.

The competition, which attracted partners such as AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) and National AIDS Council (NAC) highlighted the abundance of young football talent in Bulawayo's communities and underscored the importance of grassroots sporting initiatives in nurturing future stars.
