The History of Social Chess in Africa
And Clubs Driving It Today - in line with Knights Chess Article by Mr John Chibvuri of Knights Academy.

Chess came to Africa over 1,000 years ago through Arab traders, but social/community chess as we know it today started growing in the last 40 years. It’s no longer just an elite game — it’s now a tool for youth development, education, and community building.

Brief History of Social Chess in Africa

1980s - 1990s: School & Club Beginnings
Countries like Zambia, Kenya, Nigeria, and South Africa started school chess programs. The goal was to improve concentration and maths performance. Chess was introduced as an "after-school" activity in townships and ghettos.

2000s: Chess as a Development Tool
NGOs and federations began using chess to fight drug abuse, idleness, and crime in poor urban areas. The idea: “Give a child a board, not a bottle.”
FIDE also launched "Chess in Schools" programs across Africa.

2010s - Today: Social Chess Boom
With free online learning + affordable boards, community clubs exploded. Knights Chess Academy Zimbabwe (KCAZ) was born around this time! ...in January 2011. Social chess now means: free/low fee sessions, street tournaments, mentorship, and using chess to keep youth focused. It mirrors soccer clubs in ghettos — accessible, weekly, and community-led.

Club Examples in Africa - Similar to Knights Chess

Knights Chess with its Saturday sessions, mentorship, and focus on youthful players fits into a wider African movement:

Knights Chess - Zimbabwe Weekly Knights Chess Session in Highfield. Focus mostly on young players development as well as a few interested adults; sessions, social play or league matches within local and surrounding communities. Keeps boys/girls off streets. Builds discipline, gives low-income kids tournament exposure.
Chess in Slums - Nigeria, Lagos Founded by Tunde Onakoya. Teaches chess for free in Makoko slum. Kids use chess to get scholarships. Took a slum kid to become African Chess Champion. Proved chess can lift kids out of poverty.
Kasparov Chess Foundation Africa Runs programs in South Africa, Rwanda, Uganda. Teacher training + free boards in townships. Focus on education. Uses chess to improve maths and critical thinking in government schools.
Mind Games Zambia Community chess in Lusaka compounds. Free coaching + inter-compound leagues. Targets unemployed youth. Gives them coaching jobs and a reason to stay in school.
Kigali Chess Club - Rwanda Free Saturday chess in Kigali markets and community halls. Post-genocide healing tool. Brings different communities together over the board.
Checkmate Foundation - Ghana Street chess + school leagues in Accra. Focus on girls in chess. Fights gender stereotypes in ghetto areas.
Soweto Chess Club - South Africa Township club running leagues since 1990s. Produced IMs and GMs from Soweto. Proves talent exists in ghettos with proper support.

How Social Chess Helps in Ghetto/African Communities

This is exactly what Knights Chess is doing:

Keeps Youth Focused: 2 hours every Saturday like the Knights Chess Session 10am-12pm replaces time that could be spent on phones or in trouble. As well additional social league matches from 1pm - 2:30pm Saturdays for those free to play.
Low Cost, High Value: All you need is a board, pieces, and a hall/place like Mushandirapamwe hotel, very quiet and convenient environment. No expensive equipment like soccer kits, cricket equipment etc.
Mental Health: Teaches patience, handling loss, and planning ahead — critical skills in tough environments.
Pathways: From social club → provincial → national → international. Just recent example: Nevson Jnr Tadisa Chida winning silver at J.R. Mawere in Kwekwe, Tadiwanashe Tapera winning the Minerva U16 Boys Gold, and Arabella Mutibvu doing well in the U8 section Zim Open; shows how far club players can go. And in March 2026, Nicole Chibvuri becoming a 3-time NASH Harare Province champion in her U15 Girls age group.
Community Hub: Parents, coaches, and elders meet. Like soccer clubs, the chess club becomes the center of the community.

Why Knights Chess Fits the African Model
Knights Chess follows the 3 pillars that make African social chess work:

Competition + Care: Tournaments like Mirneva Zim Open + J.R. Mawere, but also checking on kids who can’t attend due to financial constraints

Zimbabwe Chess Federation (ZCF) congratulates Jarmil Ndoro on achieving the International Arbiter (IA) title from FIDE. His path to this level was demanding and required patience, focus, and sustained effort. Through unwavering consistency and a strong sense of responsibility, IA Jarmil Ndoro has successfully earned this well deserved milestone.

IA Ndoro has served in various capacities, including Arbiter, Deputy Chief Arbiter, and Chief Arbiter, in numerous ZCF rated chess events.

Zimbabwe Chess commends his dedication and consistent performance in chess arbitration, which has ultimately culminated in his attainment of the IA title.

Zimbabwe Chess Federation (ZCF) wishes to officially congratulate Mr. Benson Magomo on the successful attainment of his FIDE International Arbiter title.

Mr. Magomo also serves in the ZCF Executive as Chairman of Mashonaland West Province.The Federation commends his dedication to the advancement of chess and recognizes this achievement as a significant milestone for both him and ZCF.
