Such a fantastic turnout at our very first Family Friday evening last night! Thank you to all those who attended - all ages, all abilities - it was awesome to be part of! The hugest thank you to Pat Izzett, our superhero coach, who gave so much time and energy to help the many MANY youngsters who arrived, encouraging the love of squash. We look forward to holding more of these evenings.

The St John’s Squash Club committee and members are so very sad to hear of the passing of Paul Retzlaff. Paul was a loyal member of the club, and a regular of the jovial Saturday squash group. He was a gentleman, a valued friend and player, always with a ready smile, and will be greatly missed. Our thoughts are with his family and his partner Sue at this very hard time. Rest in peace Paul.

ST JOHNS SQUASH CLUB NEWSLETTER – SEPTEMBER 2020
Dear Members
We trust that everyone is keeping well and sane during these chaotic COVID 19 times.
We apologise for the lack of communication during the last few months as the world effectively shut down. We hope this newsletter brings you up to date on what has been happening behind the scenes.
As you are all aware our Chairman, Dr. Jim Hill, lost his battle with cancer on 25th April 2020. Dr. Jim will be sorely missed, and the club will be organising a celebration of his life once his family have been able to hold a memorial, and the current restrictions have been lifted. We will keep you informed.
Whilst Jim was sick he officially resigned as Chairman. An interim Chairman for the Committee was required, and as per the constitution, the existing Committee are able to select a new Chairman from within the Committee. Robbie Taylor was nominated and all Committee members were unanimous in this decision. Robbie accepted and will be the Chairman until the next AGM which will be held on 10th October 2020.
AGM
The AGM will be held on Saturday 10th October 2020 at 12.30pm at the Club. 10th October is also World International Squash Day, so what a perfect day to hold it, and let’s hope it’s a positive sign! A separate email will be sent out informing members of the AGM.
We will be hosting a lunch following the AGM at a different venue, which will be communicated to members as soon as confirmation has been received. Please join us with your families, and bring your cooler boxes along.
As per every year, the Committee members are up for re-election. We have had 3 resignations:
We say goodbye to Casper Coetzee Snr. Casper has been an integral part of the Club Room and without him we wouldn’t have such a well stocked Club Room. During the fuel crisis and shortages, Casper always managed to supply drinks for the Club Room taking up a lot of his personal time and fuel driving to various outlets sourcing stock. A very big thank you to Casper for his amazing efforts and hard work.
Nicola Young has also resigned. We thank Nicola for her continuous support and help at all the events held at the Club.
Iain Edwards is resigning. For the past 14 years Iain has been very involved with the Club, whether on the Committee or just a regular member. He has been in charge of Maintenance for a number of years, always ensuring the courts are of a standard we, as members, are accustomed to. He has made sure that the showers are in good working order as well as other general maintenance and improvements done in and around the Club. Thank you very much Iain for all your efforts and hard work.
Please can we ask members to consider joining the Committee or nominating a fellow member you feel would benefit the Club. The positions on the Committee are:
Chairman
School Representative
Secretary
Treasurer
IT
Maintenance
Club Room
Fund raising
Normally we hold the Club Squash Championships at the same time as the AGM. Due to circumstances completely beyond our control, this year we will only hold the Championships as and when the Club is officially allowed to open.
RE-OPENING OF COURTS
Robbie is in constant communication with Dr. Lucky Mlilo (Chairman of Zimbabwe Squash) and up until Wednesday last week, squash is still considered a medium risk sport by the Government. Dr. Mlilo mentioned that once soccer was allowed to resume, squash would likely follow suit, although he could not give us any time indication.
As schools have been allowed to open on 14th September for Grades 7, Form 4, Lower and Upper 6, Robbie will be approaching the relevant authorities at the School to get their input on allowing the Courts to possibly operate during the day. We will keep you updated, and we continue to try!
When the Courts re-open there will be very strict procedures to follow, as set out below:
• Temperature taken and sanitisation on entry to the Courts.
• No mask, no entrance into the courts. Once inside the court, the mask can be removed.
• Members only, no guest players.
• The bar will not be open.
• No showers permitted
When the Club re-opens solely for squash, the Club Room will not be open. Should you wish to top up your card, you may contact Natalie Stewart (0774108755). Please send her your proof of payment into the CABS Account and she will top up your card - please note this takes time and at least 2 days notice is required. As and when the Club opens we will send a further email notifying members, together with the relevant bank details. Please note our Ecocash Account has been closed.
FEES FOR 2020/2021
You will be aware that annual membership fees are usually due as at 01st October. We appreciate that due to most unfortunate COVID19 circumstances no-one has been able to play or access the Club these past 6 months, and we really appreciate your support and understanding during this time. We are endeavouring to use this time to ensure all maintenance and upkeep of the courts is attended to, in the hopes we have facilities of our usual high standard to return to. We have taken into consideration the effect that COVID19 has had on everyone and adjusted the fees accordingly. Please see fees below:
Family Member for 1 year -US$ 120
Single Member-US$ 90
Pensioner/Student-US$ 30
Country Member-US$ 50
Visitor Fee (when allowed)-US$ 5
These prices are in US Dollars but are payable in local currency at the rate of the day.
Again, we thank you all for your support during these very difficult times, and look forward to welcoming you back to St. John’s Squash Club – hopefully in the very near future!
