What we are missing here are the comments made by Marshall Munetsi on a South African radio station, where he raised concerns about how ZIFA handles communication and player welfare. To a large extent, these comments influenced his dropping from the final AFCON squad list.

Here is the correct procedure that should have been followed:

1. The player (or his club) must notify the national team of the injury.

2. Communication with the club doctors is the first step. The national team must request and review the medical report from the player’s club.
3. The player is usually required to travel to camp, unless the injury is clearly severe and travel would worsen the condition.

4. National team doctors must assess the player to confirm the injury and determine whether he can participate or needs to be withdrawn.

5. Only after this assessment can the national team officially decide to:

Clear him to play,

Place him on rehabilitation within the camp, or

Release him back to his club and call up a replacement.

It is important to emphasise that you do NOT drop a player without consulting him or his club.
Doing so is unprofessional and creates unnecessary conflict with both the player and his team.
