Nope! False! Not having it! While on some occasions you might feel sore, specifically if a very stiff muscle has been loosened up during the session, pain isn’t proportionate to treatment quality or even effectiveness.
This is an archaic way of thinking – pain isn’t weakness leaving the body! It’s your body telling you that something is wrong! It’s letting you know that an area has been damaged, and encouraging you to take care of it.
Good massage practice involves constant communication with your patients. They’ll be the ones who might feel any potential pain, not you, so they need to feel that they can tell you! You want to aim for the “therapeutic edge” – a level of pleasant discomfort, similar to scratching an itch.

Soft tissue therapists, be they osteopaths, chiropractors, physiotherapists or massage therapists are not tow trucks, they’re mechanics. Maintain your body like you maintain your car.

This is a huge FALSE! Massage doesn't cause our muscles to 'flush' out lactic acid - it's not like wringing a sponge! Our muscles don't typically store huge amounts or lactic acid for longer than an hour, so unless you step out of the gym and onto a massage table, it's likely that it is all gone!
Researchers in Science Translational Medicine found that massage actually helps us feel less sore after physical activity by reducing inflammation and promoting mitochondrial biogenesis, which increases our muscle glucose uptake.
If you want to read more about this please see Massage Therapy Attenuates Inflammatory Signaling After Exercise-Induced Muscle Damage by Crane et al (2012) - it's really interesting!

Credit to Susan Findlay. Massage should not be painful. Sports massage in particular has a reputation for being painful. It should ease restricted movement and aid relaxation, helping to keep you in tune with your musculoskeletal mechanics and minimize injury.

Why Men Should Do Pilates
Men often shy away from Pilates because it seems like a female-dominated practice. But in reality, many athletes use it to improve their overall performance.
