This is what we try to explain to the kids. All elements of hockey are played in small areas and playing cross ice or smaller ice games are incredibly beneficial. Even the pros do it!!
Ridiculous when you stop and think about it.

Last practice for the u12's last night. It's been a pleasure to coach every single one of these players and also to meet their families. I will miss them dearly.
Abu Dhabi are lucky to have such a great hockey family.
Thanks for having me,
Tom Carlon (coach of Abu Dhabi storms u12 2015-2016)

Getting cut from the team: Parents should encourage kids, not slam coaches A growing chorus of experts say parents should focus on encouraging kids after they are cut from a team, rather than levelling critiques against coaches

Following on from that last post, this youtube video is a great one to explain where to cut the stick

Something our coaches have noticed a lot recently is how the length of a players hockey stick can really affect their ability to use it well. Lots of junior players will use a stick that is just so long that it stops them from being able to control the puck anywhere near as well as they could if it was sized correctly.
In this picture from our recent tournament in Al Ain, you can clearly see Jack and Miguel both holding their sticks with their top hand quite far down from the top of the stick, this is likely because where they're actually holding it is their more comfortable and natural position. The problem with all that left over stick at the top is that is gets in the way. If a player does hold their stick at the top when it is this long, it means a lot of missed passes, missed shots and general frustration with not being able to control it as well as they should.
Our coaches have been talking to a few players about this recently but here are a few useful articles and videos that can help you and your child select the correct length stick

What a brilliant tournament organised by all at the Saudi Falcons ice hockey club!
The Storms did themselves proud once again with all three teams playing incredibly well.
Well done to the A team for finishing third and signing off with their best win of the season - 8-1 against a team that they tied with on the previous day.
Our B team although short benched played out of their skins and produced some great hockey and showing how much they're progressing.
And last but certainly not least, a huge congratulations to our C team who really showed their skills and won themselves a second place medal only just losing out in the final game!!
So proud of all these kids who just keep proving every time they step on the ice that they are listening and learning.
Awesome job Storms!!
