Mandy Arnold lost 6 stone to avoid going under the knife
Mandy Arnold before and after
After years battling with her weight, Mandy Arnold was all set for the drastic step of a gastric band operation.
But the reaction she received from a colleague shamed her enough to change her mind.
Instead, the mother-of-two embarked on a healthy eating and exercise regime, shifting over 6stones with a unique workout and nutrition programme.
Things came to a head when shop manager Mandy asked her deputy Tracey if she would take over running the store while she underwent the operation.
"I was shocked when Tracey snapped at me 'Is it for medical reasons? No? Well, you shouldn't have it! How can you put yourself through surgery you don't need?'
I burst into tears telling her she didn't know what it was like and I didn't know what else to do."
Tracey was able to suggest an alternative. A colleague of hers had undergone a dramatic size and shape with a local Personal Training Centre.
Reluctantly Mandy promised she'd try that first. But after years of trying to lose weight she was sceptical.
"I was a size 16, even as a teenager, and went to my first slimming class at 15," she recalls.
"Dunking biscuits in my tea was my downfall. I'd eat them all day long, taking a handful at a time. I could easily get through a packet without realising.
"I tried all those ridiculous fads like the cabbage or grapefruit diet - with all the side-effects like headaches and shakes. But nothing worked."
Mandy says that losing both parents in three years hit her hard - and saw her dress size expand from 16 to 22.
"I was obsessed with my thighs and always asked my husband Dave 'do my legs look big in this?' He assured me he loved me and I was still the woman he married but there were times I cried over my weight."
The turning point came in 2008 when they celebrated their 20th wedding anniversary with a holiday.
"Looking at recent holiday photos, I was horrified. I'd never thought of myself as having a round face. But there it was staring at me."
In desperation, Mandy typed "weight-loss surgery" into her computer.
"I spent hours reading about gastric band procedures - surgery to restrict the size of the stomach and how much could be eaten.
"I didn't think of it as a quick fix. It was a last resort - a desperate attempt to be slim. But sticking to her word, Mandy went to her nearest branch of Rob Blakeman’s BodyZone in Birmingham, West Mids, for a session with a personal trainer.
The programme involved healthy eating and two weekly 15-minute one-to-one sessions in the gym, exercising with weights.
Mandy was skeptical just 2 brief workouts could work but gave it a try after seeing all the other incredible ‘Before & After’ Pictures.
“They had so many profiles of successful clients, I just couldn’t argure with the results I could see other people had achieved!” Says Mandy.
She began keeping a food diary, and was shocked to realise how much she'd been eating. She changed her diet and within six months, Mandy was a slim, toned size 12.
"You could see the definition in my arms, shoulders and tummy," she says. "Before, if it fitted, I wore it, no matter what it looked like. Now I wear clothes it doesn't look like I'm spilling out of.
Mandy can't believe now how she ever contemplated surgery. "I'm so grateful to Tracey for talking me out of it. She even made it to the cover of Bella magazine as one of their Slimmers of the Year!!
