Branding vs. Marketing vs. Sales
Let’s get this clear once and for all.
1) Branding: Giving your audience a SINGLE, POWERFUL reason to connect with you.
2) Marketing: Capturing the attention of your audience based on the aforementioned reason.
3) Sales: Converting that attention into revenue.
You need all three in your business and you need a clear strategy for each.
Depending on the size of your business and the stage it is in, you may choose to focus on one over the others, for a while. And that’s ok. But at no point can you completely cross any out, and expect your business to work.

Five pant-sh*ttingly scary things brands do that give strategists and marketers nightmares:
👻 Treat the whole world, and other assorted planets, as potential customers.
👻 Start off by creating a brand and end up with a fancy logo and nothing else.
👻 Go for a rebrand and end up with a fancier logo and still nothing else.
👻 Create an entire marketing plan focused around ‘one’ channel.
👻 Have an amazing external brand in place but the internal brand is all in tatters.

What is the worst thing you can do to your brand?
Turn it into a copy of the 100 other brands in the market.
But if you don’t have the big bucks to shell out to get it done professionally, then just make sure you get these basics in place.
✅ Do your customers actually want what you’re offering. Is it solving their problem or their need?
✅ Is there any part of the offer that could solve a problem or need that you haven’t considered yet?
✅ What is the one way that you can stand out amongst your competitors?
✅ What are you promising and is it communicated well?
✅ How are you talking to them? Language is the most important. Make sure they can connect with you.
✅ What is your marketing strategy? Take into account your strengths first before delving into any platform or channel.
Once this is in place, you’ll already be way ahead of 80% of your competitors.

A personal brand trumps a corporate brand.
What??! 😳
Don’t get me wrong. Both are equally important.
But a strong personal brand can:
👏 help you build numerous businesses
👏 establish you as an expert in your industry
👏 open up doors to opportunities you never knew existed
It’s truly the most powerful asset you’ll ever have.
So if you ever have to choose between building your personal brand and building one for your business, definitely do both 😁 But give your personal brand a little more priority.

I was in the desert yesterday shooting video content for a client and in between taking pics of falcons, trying to shoot videos while inside a car going crazy on the dunes (those who have been dune bashing can identify with this), and trying to shoot videos while sandboarding (don’t ask), I started reflecting on my days as an agency-owner.
The transition usually goes from being a freelancer to starting your own agency and while I may have gone backwards, my work remains the same and so do the lessons.
So here are 10 takeaways that remain true whichever side of the fence you may be on.
👉 Know your worth.
👉 The work you do is not as important as HOW you do it.
👉 Have a strong, yet simple, process in place and stick to it.
👉 Make sure you have a minimum of 3 different ways of getting in clients.
👉 The people you work with or who work for you will make or break your business.
👉 Collaboration will always trump competition.
👉 Never be afraid to ask for help.
👉 A client’s trust is as difficult to gain as it’s easy to lose.
👉 Don’t be afraid to pivot or make drastic changes in your business if necessary.
👉 Focus on building strong relationships.

Your brand needs an enemy!
If it doesn’t have one, you need to create one.
That doesn’t mean you need someone to beat up on your brand 😎
But you need something to take a stand against.
Because that is what will help you solidify your brand perception in your audience’s mind.
So go out there and take a stand for something you truly believe in.

Why do I keep harping about brand voice?

👉 And it’s the ONLY way to humanise your brand.
