We’ve unfortunately entered an age where the phone is practically joined to our hands and fingers but did you know it physiologically basically detriments your workout and reduces the impact and effect your workout would otherwise have with no screen time for 45 minutes. Here’s what happens when you keep picking up your phone during your workout:

1. Phone use pulls you into external-dissociative focus, which severs the proprioceptive feedback loop your brain uses to monitor muscle tension, joint position, and movement quality in real time. This is why form breaks down — you’re not “listening” to the muscle anymore.

2. Divided attention (texting mid-set) reduces cortical-to-muscular signal strength, meaning fewer motor units fire, less tension is generated, and the same rep does less work.

3. Phone checking (especially work notifications) triggers small sympathetic spikes — cortisol and heart rate variability shifts — even when the content is neutral. During exercise, this competes with the heart rate and breathing rhythm your body is trying to regulate for the training effect itself, so your body is essentially context-switching between “workout stress” and “notification stress.”

4. On something like a treadmill, looking down at a phone shifts head position, which changes spinal alignment and gait mechanics — that’s a big part of why “no phones on the treadmill” is a safety rule, not just a focus rule.

Unless you are a doctor on call where someone’s life depends on you, put the phone down for 45 minutes and enjoy the notification detox during your workout!

You know you’ve found your people when...

Class ends and instead of rushing out, you turn to the person next to you and say “same time Thursday?” or “should we do that run together this weekend?”

That’s not just fitness. That’s community 💪

It doesn’t happen on day one. It doesn’t happen because we force it. It happens because real training, real effort, real sweat next to someone creates something genuine.

We’ve watched it unfold many times at Chisel N Stride. New faces become familiar ones. Familiar ones become training partners. Training partners become part of your week, your goals, your story. Take HJ from South Korea and Virginia from Greece who love running and decided to join Stride & Stretch together on a weekly basis.

Still looking for your people? Come try a class. You might find more than a workout 🙏

Here’s the part most desk-based professionals miss: the Chisel N Stride group class or personal training session you just crushed at the studio isn’t the biggest lever on your daily calorie burn. It’s NEAT — Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis. The walking, the stairs, the standing, the pacing on calls, the fidgeting.

For most people with a desk job, NEAT actually outweighs the workout itself. One great class doesn’t “earn” you the right to sit still for the other 9+ hours.

So the move isn’t more of the same in the studio — it’s staying in motion around it:
↳ Stand up every 45-60 min
↳ Take the stairs
↳ Walk your calls
↳ Get outside at lunch, even for 15 min

Train hard. Then don’t undo it by 🪑 all day.

Meet Christa. 85 years young and keeping up with our Chiselers like it’s nothing. 💪

When she first called to join classes and mentioned she was 85 and fit, we honestly thought we were being pranked. Then Christa walked through the door and proved every single one of us wrong.

She works out alongside our regular community, matches the energy, and leaves every class with a smile. And when we asked her secret to longevity? She didn’t hesitate:

“I’ve been exercising regularly since my 40s, I don’t think about my age at all, and I hang out with younger people!”

Many of our Chiselers have quietly whispered “I want to look and feel exactly like this when I reach 85.” Honestly, same.

Christa, you are a true inspiration to this community. Thank you for showing us what’s possible. 🙏

No two people train the same way. So why would your program be?

Emily came to us with knee irritation, post-workout crashes, and an inconsistent routine. Over the past year, we tested movement styles, dialled in her nutrition, and cut the habits holding her back.

The result? Zero knee pain. Strength training with confidence. A nutritional approach that actually fits her life. And she’s moving 4+ times a week without burning out.

That’s the personal training pathway. It’s not a template. It’s built around you, your body, and your lifestyle.
Emily, keep up the amazing effort 💪

In exercise physiology, intensity isn’t sweat, soreness, or how you feel — it’s objective load relative to your capacity. For cardio, that’s %HR max or pace/power at threshold. For strength, that’s %1RM or reps-in-reserve. This is how we coach at Chisel N Stride — every session is programmed against real markers, not guesswork.

And here’s the part people don’t expect from a fitness studio: not every class needs to be 100% intensity. You have a job, a family, a life to run outside these walls — and unless you’re training for a specific event or goal, going all-out every session isn’t necessary and isn’t even optimal. Most of your training should sit in moderate zones, with harder efforts placed deliberately, not constantly.

We train smart, not just hard as we take the big picture and a longer view in mind when it comes to getting fit.

Cardiovascular fitness improves through the overload principle: your heart has to work harder than its baseline for it to adapt. Strolling at a conversational pace, however many steps you rack up, keeps your heart rate in a low zone that doesn’t create that stimulus.

To actually improve your cardio fitness, you need:
🔹 Intervals — bursts that spike your heart rate
🔹 Incline or pace changes — hills, stairs, or a brisker walk
🔹 Sustained effort — enough to notice your breathing change

The takeaway: steps count for activity. They don’t automatically count for fitness. Move with intent, not just volume. Join our Stride & Stretch class Tuesday 6:15 pm / Friday 6:15 pm to improve your cardiovascular fitness.

Persistency leads to perfection. 🙌

We want to take a moment to celebrate Camilla, who has been part of the Chisel N Stride family for over 2 years and has completed more than 70 Pilates classes with us.

The proof is in the pudding. Watch her move and you’ll see exactly what consistent, dedicated training does to technique. Clean lines. Controlled movement. Real strength.

This isn’t a transformation story measured in weeks. It’s a commitment story measured in sessions, in effort, in showing up even when life gets busy.

Keep up the great work Camilla 💪
