After many requests for a rating between SDI Open Water Scuba Instructor and Course Director, we have created the SDI Elite SCUBA Instructor recognition certification!

This certification was created for several reasons. First and foremost we wanted dedicated SDI Instructors to be recognized for their accomplishments and give new professionals a goal to reach for. We want to provide a rating that celebrates your accomplishments and recognizes active SDI instructors
dedicated to making the best divers in the world.

For members crossing over to SDI from another agency we wanted to recognize certifications that might be equivalent to the SDI Elite Scuba Instructor. While conduction conducting cross overs we have seen certification levels above Open Water instructor, but not Course Director. In order to recognize this level of achievement we also set up an crossover path for SDI Elite Scuba Instructor.

Applying for this recognition is easy. Confirm you meet the prerequisite requirements, collect ALL supporting documentation, including your certification counts and apply for the upgrade.

During the first 6 months of this release registration for this is FREE for qualifying individuals. This means prior to June 15th, 2024 anyone that qualifies, applies and provides all their supporting documentation
can be registered at no charge. In order to do this you need to fill out the pdf version of the SDI Upgrade form. You will not see a check box for this certification so you must write in “Elite Scuba Instructor” in the “other” space.

Let’s discuss the prerequisites in order to apply. As always full details can be found in the SDI Standards but we will go through these now.

In order to apply you
- Must be an SDI Open Water Scuba Diver Instructor (SDI Assistant Instructor not eligible)
- Must be an instructor for a minimum of seven SDI specialties (First Response Instructor certifications can count, see standard)
- Must have issued 50 SDI diver certifications.
- Must have issued a minimum of four SDI Divemaster or SDI Assistant Instructor certifications

This is an SDI certification.

SDI/TDI Instructors earn 21.3% more annual income than PADI instructors. Something to think about if you are considering becoming a SCUBA instructor.

For SDI Master Scuba diver student must be

- certified as SDI Rescue Diver
- 50 logged dives - verify and save a copy in your files
- 4 SDI/TDI/ERDI specialities or equivalent from another agency.
