There is a Persian proverb that states this same philosophy: “To spare the ravening leopard is an act of injustice to the sheep.” While we may wish to live in peace with all people and animals, that is not the world we live in. Just as there are predators in the wild that will ravage your sheep or cattle, there are evil people in this world who will continue to hurt innocent people unless they are stopped.

When a predator in the wild is devastating a rancher’s cattle, the rancher has two choices. He can do nothing because he wants to spare the wolf, or he can shoot the wolf to protect his cattle. Unfortunately, he cannot spare both. Sparing the wolf would be sacrificing the life of his cattle and his livelihood.

Seneca makes the same point concerning human predators. If you spare the guilty murderer, you are doing an injustice to the innocent victim and his loved ones. This is not only an injustice to the victim, but puts other innocent people at risk of being victims as well. Predators will continue to prey on the weak and elderly until courageous warriors stand up and stop them.

To allow criminals to continue to hurt innocent people is to allow injustice and fear to permeate the community. As you already know by now, justice is one of the fundamental principles of Stoicism. While you may feel a certain empathy for all people, it is unjust to allow your compassionate heart to allow the guilty to go unpunished for his crimes.

The innocent victim deserves more compassion than the vicious criminal, and sparing the guilty is being more compassionate to the criminal than the victim.
