Heavy guys that are getting into running are usually not aware of these 3 issues. Make sure you fix it.

If you’re a heavier guy getting into running, pay attention to your cadence.
Cadence is simply how many steps you take per minute.

And when you’re heavy, every step comes with more absolute force going through the body.
One common mistake is running with a cadence that’s too low for your pace, which often means you’re reaching too far in front of your body and overstriding.

That can increase braking forces and increase the load around the knee.
A slightly higher cadence usually means shorter, quicker steps, with the foot landing closer to your centre of mass.

And studies show that increasing cadence modestly, around 5–10% at the same running speed, can reduce loading at the knee and hip.
But here’s the important part:

Don’t chase 180 steps per minute just because Instagram told you to.

There is no magic cadence.
I’ve been running around the mid-160s, and my objective is simply to become smoother, more efficient and let cadence improve naturally as my running develops.

For a heavier beginner, the goal isn’t to run like an elite marathoner.
It’s to reduce unnecessary braking, control impact and accumulate kilometres without your knees and hips being in constant pain.

Fix this and your running will actually start to feel good.

DAY 5/70 | ROAD TO HYROX DUBAI

Today was my first proper interval session.

6 × 400 m
60 seconds walking recovery

Warm-up:
1.6 km at 8:29/km.

Working pace was around the low 6-minute/km range, with my fastest recorded 400 m at:

2:26
6:05/km

For somebody who's only recently started taking running seriously, this felt surprisingly good.

But the most interesting part wasn't the pace.

It was my heart-rate recovery.

At the end of the 400 m efforts, my HR was generally around 160–163 bpm.

Less than 60 seconds later, during the walking recovery, I was around 130 bpm.

A drop of roughly 30 beats in under one minute.

Early heart-rate recovery is heavily influenced by parasympathetic reactivation: basically, how quickly the body starts switching from “work” back toward “recovery.”

One workout doesn't prove that I suddenly have an elite cardiovascular system.

But being able to repeatedly raise the heart rate, recover quickly and go again is a very encouraging sign.

Second observation: shoes.

My On Cloudboom Max feels completely different when I increase the pace.

During slow easy running, I mainly notice the cushioning and stability.

Once I get closer to 6:00/km, I can really feel the responsiveness of the shoe.

That doesn't mean performance shoes don't work at slower speeds.

It means the sensation of what the shoe is doing becomes much more obvious when I start moving faster.

For a heavier beginner runner, I'd still prioritise comfort, stability and consistency before worrying about aggressive race shoes.

Running is currently my biggest area of opportunity.

And that's exactly why I'm documenting all of it.
