The founders of the Co-Active Model came up through the human-potential movement of the 70s and 80s. They watched people have genuine, life-altering breakthroughs in a weekend, only to wrestle against the entropy of returning to who they’d been before.

So the question Co-Active’s founders set out to answer wasn't "How do we create transformation?" People knew how to create a peak moment.

The question was harder and less glamorous: How do you keep it going? How do you build a way of relating to each other that keeps drawing out what's most human and creative in a person, not once, but continually?

How do you evoke transformation as if the verb is always in the present tense, never past tense?

That question is a big part of the origin story of the Co-Active Model.

It wasn't necessarily designed to be just about coaching. It was designed to be a structure for sustained human transformation, a way two people could be together that kept calling something forward.

And it’s why the Model thrives in any context where two or more humans are involved, whether at work or at home.

Transformation isn't an event you can schedule. It's a dynamic you create and are created by.
