Had a refresher today with Leigh, after not having a chance to dive for a couple of years.
Leigh did a really good job with the refresher, I felt very confident diving with him, and it was a great dive. Saw lots of fish, and a lobster hiding under rocks. It was great to get back into diving.
Hark! the Stripey Angels Swim. [Rob's Reef, yesterday]

Great Dive operation, Great Dives, Great people ! Thanks Bryan, Rob & The Captain !
GoPro Hero 4 found! I believe this is a photo of the owner of the camera (found on the memory card). Does anyone recognize him? I would like to return the camera to its rightful owner if possible. "T" and student off Black's Point on Tuesday as we passed as ships in the night! :-)
Many, many thanks to Leigh and Brian for the kindness, friendliness and support that they've given to the Antigua Marine Life biological recording project. Just a shame the the "fluffy" weather in September precluded diving for much of the time :-) Highly recommended for all visiting divers and unquestionably outstanding in terms of their diving professionalism. From our point we'd like to stress their selfless support of initiatives to the greater good of all. thanks again :-) And now 2 boats operational soon (fingers crossed for them)!
Awesome day, thanks guys.
Shadow box of my wife and I's vacation in Antigua, and of course, Dive Carib gets a place in it! Thanks guys for making our vacation one to remember.

When you look over the side of the boat and can clearly see the reef 50ft/15m down…. you know it’s going to be a great dive!

Fantastic visibility last week, and the small amount of rain that we had has made the greenery pop!

As usual, lots of turtle sightings at The Pillars of Hercules.

Recently there’s been a couple of young green turtles (Chelonia mydas) snoozing on the rocks; this one gave us a slow swim by 🐢🤙

Remember, you have a much better chance of spending some time with wildlife if you approach cautiously, keep your distance, and maintain good buoyancy.

🛑 WARNING GRAPHIC 🛑

This is a video currently circulating, taken in Antigua, depicting a pregnant nurse shark, caught by a line, being pulled up on to the beach, before being hit repeatedly by an axe (we have left that part out).

We at DiveCarib would obviously rather our sharks stay alive and in the water.
However, even if you’re not interested in seeing and experiencing sharks in the wild, there are very good reasons as to why you should not kill them, especially for food.

On that point; eating sharks is extremely unhealthy. When pollutants enter the ocean, marine organisms absorb the toxins and heavy metals, unable to excrete them. A fish will eat these organisms where the toxins will accumulate in its body until it’s eaten by a bigger fish, causing the toxins to bioaccumulate through the food chain.
As the toxins travel up the food chain, their concentration increases through a process called ‘biomagnification’. Sharks are apex predators sitting at the top of the food web and so these biomagnified toxins will be stored in their body and continuously added to during its long life, eventually passing on to the human that eats it.

Just one example: Sharks have been found to contain higher concentrations of methyl-mercury than any other seafood, due to bioaccumulation and their place at the top of the food chain. Methyl-mercury is one of the most dangerous poisons for a human and can cause loss of motor control, corrosion of skin and mucous membranes, blindness, deafness, impotence, sterility as well as being linked to Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s.

If you’re not killing the shark for food, then why?! This is like killing a lion or an elephant; it is a keystone species (i.e. vital to the ecosystem).

“A few months ago we witnessed a Caribbean reef shark (C. perezi) resting motionless on the sea floor, under a small ledge on the reef. There was no apparent current or cleaning station.

This behaviour is not quite as rare as you may think; it has been recorded in the Caribbean since the 1970’s, and this is not the first time that it has been seen in Antigua.

However it is a relatively rare sighting for us in Antigua, and it definitely made our day!

Normally these sharks keep swimming in a forward motion, using ‘ram ventilation’; pushing oxygenated water into their mouth and over their gills. However, they are capable of brief periods of inactivity, during which time buccal pumping takes over as the method of ventilation (Kelly et al 2019).”
