The open call for the third cohort is here, this time dedicated to autumn migration in the Divjaka-Karavasta National Park, one of Albania’s most significant wetland ecosystems.
As we face urgent ecological shifts and international transformations, this residency creates a space where ecology, art, and culture meet to increase learning, reflection, and care for nature and biodiversity, exploring diverse ways of knowing and being in relationship with the earth and one another.
An immersive field-based program brings together bird ringers, ecologists, anthropologists, artists, and nature observers to explore the dynamics of wetlands, sand dunes, and costal lagoons. Each dawn is devoted to mist-netting and bird ringing (EURING standards), while afternoons open space for cross-disciplinary exploration through artists talks, screenings, drawing, sound, photography, and natural materials gathered in the field.
Rooted in long-term expertise, the residency offers room for reflective artistic practice, situated research, and dialogue grounded in relationships with both human and more-than-human worlds. Residents are invited to reconnect with their practice and engage with place-based knowledge through independent work, a curated program, and peer exchange.
The Program, an autumn bird-ringing residency framework combining independent artistic practice with hands-on ecological fieldwork, also includes field visits across the protected area, scheduled sessions with local and international experts, artists’ talks, simple shared accommodation in rural settings, outdoor workspaces, and logistical support from the AOS team. Participants may engage with multiple ecological themes, including ornithology, coastal flora, insects, amphibians, reptiles, and small mammals, as well as optional sound-based work such as bioacoustics and field recording. Scientists, artists, musicians, curators, ecologists, anthropologists, activists, and even non-human “voices” are welcome to contribute to this collective exploration of the Divjaka-Karavasta National Park.
Itincludes field expeditions led by AOS ornithologists and guest specialists, substantial hours of bird ringing, discussions, and creative time. There is no participation fee. All costs related to the 5-day camp, field expeditions, bird-ringing sessions, ecological activities, accommodation (shared rooms), meals, and local transport (AOS office location to Divjaka-Karavasta and back), are fully covered by the organizers.
Not included: airport transfers.
Our residencies are open to those who wish to engage respectfully with place, entering with openness to listen, learn, and reflect, contributing thoughtfully to ongoing conversations across cultures, ecologies, and creative practices.
