The countdown is on! Today, we officially unveiled the Winter Deaflympics 2027 countdown clock in the heart of Innsbruck. 💙

From now on, it will count down every day until we welcome the international Deaf Community to Innsbruck – Seefeld – Tirol in January.

Barriers aren’t always visible. 👀🤟

What does accessibility mean for Deaf people in urban spaces and tourism? And how can a major sporting event help make communication barriers visible and create lasting change?

That’s what we discussed with students from Heidelberg University. From sign language and International Sign to barriers in Innsbruck and Seefeld, and what tourism and urban planning can learn from the Winter Deaflympics 2027.

Because our goal is not only to host great Games in January. We want to use the Winter Deaflympics to raise awareness, create connections and leave an impact that lasts beyond 2027. 💙

🇦🇹 Barrieren sind nicht immer sichtbar. 👀🤟

Was bedeutet Barrierefreiheit für gehörlose Menschen im urbanen und touristischen Raum? Und wie kann ein Sportgroßevent dazu beitragen, kommunikative Barrieren sichtbar zu machen und langfristig abzubauen?

Genau darüber haben wir mit Studierenden der Universität Heidelberg gesprochen. Von Gebärdensprache und International Sign über Herausforderungen in Innsbruck und Seefeld bis hin zur Frage, was Tourismus und Stadtplanung aus den Winter Deaflympics 2027 lernen können.

Denn unser Ziel ist nicht nur, im Jänner großartige Spiele zu veranstalten. Wir möchten die Winter Deaflympics nutzen, um Bewusstsein zu schaffen, Begegnungen zu ermöglichen und etwas zu hinterlassen, das über 2027 hinaus wirkt. 💙

🇬🇧 The timing couldn’t have been better. 🤟💙

Right in the middle of the International Week of Deaf People – and on International Day of Sign Languages – our sign language courses and Deaf-led PE classes kicked off this week at Akademisches Gymnasium Innsbruck.

Our instructors Lisa and Sandra, who is Deaf herself, taught the students their first signs while also giving them a new perspective on the Deaf community and what it means to be Deaf.

Why does this matter to us? Because barriers are broken down through real encounters and exchange – and we want to start with the youngest generation. 🤝

And this is just the beginning: Starting in October, the program will continue at three primary schools in Innsbruck and Seefeld. 🤟

🇦🇹 Besser hätte das Timing kaum sein können. 🤟💙

Mitten in der Woche der Gehörlosen – und ausgerechnet am Tag der Gebärdensprache – sind diese Woche unsere Gebärdensprachkurse und die Gehörlosen-Turnstunde am Akademischen Gymnasium Innsbruck gestartet.

Unsere Instruktorinnen Lisa und Sandra, die selbst gehörlos ist, haben den Schüler:innen nicht nur ihre ersten Gebärden beigebracht, sondern ihnen auch einen neuen Einblick in die Deaf Community und das Leben gehörloser Menschen gegeben.

Warum uns das wichtig ist? Weil Barrieren dort abgebaut werden, wo Begegnung und Austausch stattfinden – und weil wir damit schon bei den Jüngsten anfangen wollen. 🤝

Und das war erst der Anfang: Ab Oktober geht es an drei Volksschulen in Innsbruck und Seefeld weiter. 🤟
