(Hungarian version below)

Recently, I watched a ski analysis where the same conclusion came up again and again:

"The skier doesn’t shorten the inside leg enough — or early enough — so the outside ski gets pressured too late."

That may well be true. But in that case, it was only a part of the story. In my opinion, the real issue was a timing and an eccentric activity error caused by a mobility issue.

Skiing has always had trendy key points that suddenly seem to explain everything.

Pull back the inside ski.
Pinky-toe side.
Retraction.
Cross-under.
Squared torso.

Go back a few decades, and the words were different: parallel axes, up-unweighting — or, when the “official” language was German, *Achsenparallelität, Vor-Seitbeugen, Auslösen*, and so on.

Once an idea becomes popular, it often starts to lose its actual functional meaning.

As long as something is still new, we have to think about it to understand it. But once it becomes a buzzword, we simply repeat the word — without thinking much about what function is actually behind it.

Short leg is becoming one of those buzzwords.

In everyday ski talk, shortening the inside leg often means a way to get pressure onto the outside ski.

And yes — that can be one of its functions.
But it is far from the whole story, and in my opinion it isn’t even the most important function.
On the other hand, there are plenty of ways to load the outside ski that have little or nothing to do with shortening the inside leg.

At the same time, the short inside leg has several other important - or more important - functions. If we cover all of those with a thick layer of buzzword paint, we risk forgetting why the movement really matters.

The short leg is important. But not simply because it loads the outside ski.
And “short leg” doesn’t mean bending the knee to 90° either.
The leg should be only as short as the situation requires.
If the outside leg is at 170° and the inside leg is at 160°, that inside leg is already the shorter leg, but maybe this is enough.
Ten degrees may be almost invisible under a ski suit.
But it may still be exactly enough for that turn.

Húzd hátra a belső sílécet!
Kisujj oldali él..
Visszahúzás.(Retraction)
Cross-under élváltás.

A „rövid láb” (short leg) is ilyen divatszóvá válik.

A láb hajlítása, a rövid láb fontos.

We learn from other skiers even if we don't realize it; we instinctively copy their movement. Unfortunately, we copy not only the good, but also the bad.
Consciousness helps to filter what we let affect us, and it's not too hard to learn the basics of motion analysis.

I started this series to introduce you to how to understand the visual of skiing.
The first three introductions are worth watching because they provide a better understanding of the actual analyses. The remaining episodes present different analyses.
There will be more parts in the future. For now, we will start the series by analyzing two of the eight examples.

I highly recommend it to practicing and future ski instructors.
For them and for enthusiastic skiers, a special version of some videos is being made.

I have seen many analyses in my practice; many of them were a combination of narration and comparison about what we can see on the screen, and how it compares to the ideal example.
However, "analysis" does not mean to say what "I see," but "I consider what I saw.", researching the roots and understanding the consequences.
This framework, step-by-step guides, and analysis examples help to develop your "eyes" to a higher level.

If you find this video series useful, please like and share — it really helps!

Akkor is tanulunk a többi síelőtől, ha nem is vesszük észre; ösztönösen másoljuk őket. Sajnos nemcsak a jót, hanem a hibásat is lemásoljuk.

A további részek különböző elemzéseket mutat be.

A jövőben további részek is jönnek még. Egyelőre a nyolc példa közül kettő elemzésével kezdjük a sorozatot.

It is often said that the journey is more important than the destination. This means that the process of training, learning, and developing our skills as a ski instructor should not be rushed - it should be a time of growth, adventure, and an experience to savour.
