Building an international network to remove barriers to sport for refugees, migrants, and marginalised groups.

𝐒𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐛𝐞 𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲𝐨𝐧𝐞. Yet refugees, migrants, and ethnic minorities, especially women and girls, still face real barriers to participating in sport and physical activity. These barriers can be even greater when combined with discrimination based on gender, sexual orientation, religion, age, disability, or social status.

𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭. We connect grassroots organisations, minority initiatives, and self-organised groups with sport clubs, associations, NGOs, and public institutions, creating opportunities to learn, collaborate, and make sport more inclusive.

We put grassroots initiatives and minority-led organisations first. Because lasting change happens when communities are not only included, but empowered to lead it themselves.

𝐒𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐥𝐲 𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲𝐨𝐧𝐞. We believe the strength of a network lies in the diversity of its members. That's why we bring organisations together across Europe and the Global South to work for social inclusion in and through sport.

In 2010, 𝐬𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧 NGOs and sport organisations from across Europe launched the first SPIN project to tackle the underrepresentation of migrants, ethnic minorities, and asylum seekers in mainstream sport. What started as a project grew into an informal network behind a series of initiatives, including ESPIN, Sport Welcomes Refugees, SPIN Women, SPIN Refugees, and SPIN Youth. In 2023, we took the next step: opening the network to organisations across Europe and the Global South, and formally establishing SPIN as an international non profit under Austrian law. Today, we're growing that network further and inviting more organisations to join us.

Sport and play in a refugee context have a multitude of benefits, especially for children and youth. All this became visible during our visit to the Sahrawi camps near Tindouf in last week.
Concluding 18 months of partnership with the Sahrawi Ministry of Education and Vocational Training and Uisp Nazionale, we delivered our final project milestone, an inclusive sport event in each camp, facilitated by a wonderful team of teachers that has been working with us for one year to make this possible. A heartful thanks to all involved!
