The Heysen Trail The Friends of Heysen Trail volunteers support, promote and maintain the 1200km Trail.

The Friends acknowledge and respect Traditional Custodians of these ancestral lands: Ngarrindjeri/Ramindjeri, Kaurna, Peramangk, Ngadjuri, Nukunu and Adnyamathanha. The 1200km Heysen Trail is an adventure hike that traverses some of South Australia's most diverse and breathtaking landscapes: including coastal cliffs, beaches, native bushland, rugged gorges, pine forests and vineyards, as well as rich farmland and historic towns. Walk from Cape Jervis in the south to Parachilna Gorge in the northern Flinders Ranges, or from north to south. you may choose to tackle the experience as day walks (61), sections staying in towns or through-hiking with a tent and backpack. The Trail passes through some of the most scenic parts of the state including national parks, state forests and internationally acclaimed tourist destinations, including the Barossa Valley and the stunning Wilpena Pound, star of the Flinders Ranges. Much of the Trail crosses private land so be aware of signage and closures for fire danger season. Information and images on this page are coordinated by The Friends of Heysen Trail volunteers. It offers insights into the Heysen Trail and/or various activity organised by the Friends. The Friends works in partnership with the Department for Environment & Water as the authorised manager of the Trail on behalf of the State Government. The pretty dairy pastures of Mount Compass and Nangkita provide the backdrop for the first section of this walk. Back roads then lead you through Finniss Conservation Park and into the Mount Magnificent Conservation Park. Youโ€™ll be rewarded with spectacular views from Mount Magnificent over the southern Fleurieu Peninsula. A combination of native bushland and back-road walking completes your day.

Did you know Hooded Plovers nest along the beaches of the Heysen Trail Wild South Coast Way?

They're active from August to March. Please take care as only some 70 birds remain across the Fleurieu coast.

Walkers should note the signage: keep to the waterline, away from dunes, possible nest sites and chicks.

A pleasant walk following backroads, tracks, and fence lines through the undulating farmland of the Lower North.
Sunday 11th October: Walk 21 Hamilton to Peters Hill (17km)
This walk follows backroads and road reserves through open scrubland before a short hike up Peters Hill, where youโ€™ll be rewarded with pretty vistas over the farmlands of the Lower Mid North. Lunch at Marschalls Hut gives the opportunity to explore the history of the area.

This walk starts with several kmโ€™s of road walking before a picturesque route through bushland, followed by a steep, and likely slippery descent onto the rocky shoreline of Boat Harbor Beach. Spectacular views towards and along Tunkalilla Beach can be viewed through this part. After Boat Harbor Beach, we will make our way onto and along the soft sand of Tunkalilla Beach for approx 4km, followed by the infamous Balquhidder Hill. Sensational views back to the west will reward you at the top. This is followed by undulating hills, and a road walk back to the cars.

This challenging walk takes you through the eastern side of Scott Creek Conservation Park, an area known for its diverse flora and fauna. The trail features steep inclines and descents, requiring a good level of fitness and physical preparation. As we navigate the hilly path, we are rewarded with breathtaking views, on clear days, of the distant coastline. While the walk is challenging, the views and the natural bush make it a rewarding experience.
