Saturday 25th: Tanunda to Kapunda โ 25km
This section takes walkers along back roads and road reserves past vineyards and wineries of the Barossa Valley, through the small town of Greenock and into the cropping and grazing land of the Lower North. It is a long but mainly flat walk with only a few undulations. Pleasant vistas and changing seasonal colours make this a pretty walk, with a finish at Kapunda in easy walking distance to bakeries or pubs.
Walk Details: (Walk 20)
Sunday 26th: Kapunda to Hamilton โ 20 km
From Kapunda, we head northwest along backroads and tracks to Black Joes Road, then mainly north along fence lines and tracks to the old telephone exchange at the crossroads. The walk is over undulating, mainly open country of the Lower North Mount Lofty Ranges.

We will explore the western end of the park, making a figure-eight loop of about 11 km along three different trails. This will take us past grey box woodlands, heritage sites, and along Minnow Creek. Some undulations, but with plenty of flatter sections also. Some sections along Minnow Creek can be wet and muddy underfoot. Please be prepared with wet weather gear as needed. As the weather is warming up, please bring plenty of water and protect yourself from the sun. Bring a snack as we will stop about halfway for morning tea. There are plenty of toilets along the way.

PROTECT OUR PRECIOUS HEYSEN TRAIL: please stay on the marked Trail and camp in designated sites. Much of our Trail crosses private property, conservation land, forests and reservoirs. Camping just anywhere (wild camping) puts ongoing access to the Trail at risk. The Friends volunteers put in lots of effort to negotiate access and install tanks etc . Our website lists overnight options and distances so it's easy to plan around that info: https://heysentrail.asn.au/walking-the-heysen-trail/prepare-to-walk-the-trail/accommodation/

Saturday 18th July: Walk 15 Cudlee Creek to The Nugget Rd (23km)
Along this part of the Trail, youโll be led through the rolling hills of the Southern Mount Lofty Ranges and sections of Mount Crawford Forest. Youโll enjoy outstanding views as you climb towards Mount Gould.
Sunday 19th July: Walk 14 Montacute Heights to Cudlee Creek (19km)
After an initial road walk, the Trail makes a very long and steep descent to Sixth Creek before climbing again through Montacute Conservation Park and Mount Crawford Forest Reserve. The section between the Montacute Conservation Park and Snake Gully Road (Cudlee Creek) was devastated by bushfires in 2019. Fortunately, the vegetation is gradually returning, and youโll enjoy a pleasant walk past pretty private gardens along Holland Creek Road as you complete your walk.

This is a very long and difficult (but memorable) section of the Trail that starts with the ascent of Mt Remarkable and continues with many ascents and steep descents, plus several creek crossings through Mt Remarkable National Park, before emerging on Alligator Gorge Road.
Sunday Walk 44: Alligator Gorge Rd to Horrocks Pass โ 15km
The trail initially leads over Lavender Peak to the picturesque Stony Creek campsite. From there, tracks, back roads, and a walk next to a busy highway take walkers to the memorial to explorer John Horrocks.

Nestled amongst the Barossa Ranges, Kaiserstuhl Conservation Park is visited by Heysen Trail walkers and includes several other trails.
Our moderate-grade walk will follow the Stringybark & Wallowa tracks and a small section of the Heysen Trail. It is relatively flat with a gentle ascent of only 100 metres.
It passes through a variety of landscapes, including creeks, rocky outcrops, areas of low forest, scrub, and open grassland. We will have panoramic views across the ranges to the Barossa Valley.

Thinking about hiking the Heysen Trail, or simply curious about what makes it so special?
Our friends at Australian Hiker have released a fantastic introductory podcast all about the Heysen Trail. Whether you're planning your first day walk, tackling a section hike, or dreaming of completing the entire trail, this episode is packed with practical information, helpful tips, and plenty of inspiration.
It's a great introduction to one of Australia's premier long-distance walking trails, and well worth a listen if the Heysen Trail is on your hiking wish list.

On the 27th and 28th of June, the End2End Nifty 19s took on the challenging Sections 12 and 13 of the Heysen Trail, hiking from Mylor to Montacute in beautiful cool and dry winter weather.
Our incredible volunteer FoHT walk leadersโKristyn, Roz, Dean, Sharon and Meredithโguided 33 hikers on Saturday and 37 hikers on Sunday through a diverse and rewarding landscape.
The weekend featured long, challenging descents, steep climbs, national parks, conservation parks, picturesque towns, road walking, creek crossings and damp, shaded sections, all rewarded with spectacular views across the city.
It was a demanding but incredibly enjoyable weekend on the trail, with great company, stunning scenery and another memorable chapter in the End2End journey.

Recognising the connections, achievements & continuing service of First Nations people through the Countries we traverse on the Heysen Trail:
Ngarrindjeri/Ramindjeri, Kaurna, Peramangk, Ngadjuri, Nukunu & Adnymathanha.
Itโs National NAIDOC Week, a time for all Australians to celebrate, recognise and learn about the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
This yearโs theme, 50 Years of Deadly, marks five decades of NAIDOC Week and honours the Elders, organisers, artists and communities who have built and sustained this powerful movement.
Here in South Australia, First Nations people have been caring for Country as park rangers for more than 40 years, as well as serving in a range of different roles across DEW.
From Australiaโs first Aboriginal Ranger Training Program on Adnyamathanha Country in 1983 to the First Nations rangers working across parks today, their knowledge, leadership and connection to Country continue to shape conservation across the state.
You can show your support by getting involved in NAIDOC Week activities across South Australia, and learn more about the history of First Nations park rangers in our Good Living blog.

Section one: Port Rickaby to Port Milacowie (20km)
The varied trail will cover beaches and inland tracks that wind through coastal sand dunes and farmlands. Bring your camera, as the birdlife is a real treat. Weaving onto and out of the beach, experiencing a rock pool ecosystem. We will come across old wooden davit structures at the base of the cliff, which were once a part of a manual boat-winching system.
Section two: Port Milacowie to Point Turton (21.5 km)
Starting the day with a spectacular beach walk, complete with rock pools and birdlife, we go back in time when we arrive in Hardwick Bay, full of traditional holiday shacks. We continue our walk to Flaherty Beach, which earned acclaim in a 2021 TikTok video as โthe best beach youโve probably never heard ofโ.

This walk follows the Heysen Trail from the Bridgewater Oval through Mt George CP, Mt. Lofty Golf Course, and Woodhouse Scout Centre. We then make our way to the back of Mt. Lofty Summit, then to the top of the Botanic Garden for a well-earned morning tea. Itโs then back on some of the same trails to the cars.

This is a shorter 11 km loop walk, heading southwards along the Silver Sands beach to the Washpool wetlands. The walk then heads northwards into the Aldinga Scrub Conservation Park, visiting a range of scrublands and wetlands. The return leg will follow the beach southwards to the start/finish at the Silver Sands car park.

Cold and fog doesn't deter The Friends trail maintenance volunteers. Dom H led a hardy team in the mid-north around Huppatz Hut. Tasked to remove old stiles and install a new one, as well as checking on markers and general conditions. Huge thanks to Dom, Allan, Colin, John & Rick. We also appreciate the local landholder enabling access.
