Where to camp on the Heysen Trail?
As the Trail has evolved The Friends volunteers have developed and maintain an array of sites from basic rainwater tank & platform, where you can pop up your tent, to a diverse array of shelters and huts. Much of the Trail traverses pastoral, farming and private conservation land so it's important to respect that access and camp at designated spots.
The Friends new website has a vast source of information & distances: https://heysentrail.asn.au/walking-the-heysen-trail/prepare-to-walk-the-trail/accommodation/
National Parks [parks.sa.gov.au] & ForestrySA [forestrysa.com.au] offer some dedicated walk-in sites or sites shared with vehicle-based campers.

Over the May 16โ17 weekend, FoHT End-to-End 19 kicked off their second year on the trail, trekking from Myponga to Kyeema Conservation Park. The hiking gods were smiling on usโmiraculously, the rain held off for both days of walking!
The group got to experience a beautifully misty Yulte Conservation Park shrouded in cloud on day one, before being treated to some truly spectacular views while lunching atop Mount Magnificent on the Sunday. FoHT volunteer walk leaders did a fantastic job of making the two days run smoothly for walkers.

Saturday 30th May: Dashwood Gully to Mylor (21km)
This picturesque walk takes you through gently undulating farmland, the northern parts of Kuitpo Pine Forest, and through a significant site in South Australiaโs gold rush history, the Jupiter Creek Goldfields. Minor re-route because of logging operations.
Sunday 31st May: Kyeema to Dashwood Gully (15.5km)
The dense native bushland of Kyeema Conservation Park, the plantations of Kuitpo Forest, and pretty back roads make this a pleasant walk, especially in winter. Re-route because of logging operations has shortened this walk.

Sturt Gorge offers a remarkable nature experience in contrast to its close proximity to the suburbs. Despite being so close to urban areas, the gorge offers a serene and rugged environment to explore.
Our route involves some challenging sections, and offers views of the Sturt Dam, so a good level of fitness is essential. Walking poles are recommended. The route will depend on the Sturt River water levels and weather. We will be traversing uneven ground and rock hopping on occasion. Some sections may be slippery, so a good sense of balance is required. We will cross the river at various points, making waterproof hiking boots highly recommended.

Did you know that The Friends has funded more than 35 installed by our volunteers? Are you aware that each can cost more than $2500 even with free volunteer time?
There isn't a fee to walk the Trail but every piece of infrastructure and maintenance by volunteers has a cost. PLEASE DONATE to The Friends to help support the Trail using the donate button up front on the website: heysentrail.asn.au

End-to-End 16 began their Heysen Trail walking season last Saturday. Starting with a wet but pleasant walk on a rollercoaster of steep ascents & descents along a ridge abutting part of the Mt Remarkable NP then onto the TV tower & The Bluff Lookout. Although challenging FoHT members were gifted with stunning views of Spencer Gulf. Welcome to year 5 and the stunning Southern Flinders Ranges.
Sundayโs 19km hike continued along the ridge on Go Cart Track. This section borders the Telowie Gorge CP with many descents & ascents. After turning into a long descent through the scrub across a creek headed up along Sheepyard Track. After lunch it was a pleasant walk through farmland & an old harvested pine forest finishing on White Park Rd. Thanks to dedicated volunteer walk leaders.

HISTORY - formation of "The Friends"
โข June 1986 - Terry Lavender had been developing the Heysen Trail since 1978 with a very small team. Realising he needed more "hands" to complete the Trail, Terry called a meeting to form a volunteer group to assist with the task. At the public meeting on 1 June 1986 the Friends of the Heysen Trail and Other SA Walking Trails (The Friends) was formed.
โข Volunteers quickly assisted with maintaining sections of the completed Trail, and working groups assisted with new developments. With the enthusiastic support of the volunteers and under the capable supervision of Terry and his staff, the Heysen Trail was completed in late 1992.

A loop walk on the Heysen Trail taking in the Mt Lofty Botanic Gardens and the winding fire tracks of Cleland Conservation Park.
From our meeting point we walk north west on the main Heysen Trail route towards Mt Lofty. We then take the relatively short but steep climb to the summit of Mt Lofty. This section of the walk is challenging as we climb St. Michael Hill.
The reward is a morning tea at the Mount Lofty Summit cafe as we admire panoramic views over Piccadilly Valley and Adelaide City. BYO morning tea or pick up a coffee at the cafe.
We then take the Heysen Trail alternative route to the Mount Lofty Botanic Garden upper car park. After meandering through the garden, enjoy its tranquillity, and return to the cars.

Heysen Trail stylish stiles: why do we need them? Large parts of the Trail traverse private or conservation land so the stiles help walkers over fencelines.
The Friends volunteers Daniel & Allan took a quick trip to replace a couple at the Bundaleer Channel. Then we get to walk along an interesting piece of SA engineering history built from 1898-1902 to supply water for the local region.
