AUSTRALIA'S SHOTGUN WORLD CUP RECORD SETTING STREAK CONTINUES IN LONATO - WORLD CUP RECAP

Over the weekend Australia’s Shotgun athletes finished competition at the ISSF World Cup Shotgun event in Lonato, Italy.

Breaking attendance records for the 2026 ISSF season, the Lonato World Cup welcomed over 600 competitors from 80 different countries, as athletes looked to prove themselves on the biggest stage.

Australia’s Trap Mixed Team duo of James Willett and Catherine Skinner rose to the occasion claiming the gold medal and setting a new world record score in the Trap Mixed Teams final.

Skinner and Willett claimed the lead early into the mixed team qualification stages, before eventually qualifying top of the field on a combined score of 146 out of 150, with James Willett hitting an impressive 75 out of 75 targets.

The pair maintained their momentum moving into the final, this time with Catherine Skinner stepping up to deliver a flawless 20 out of 20 finals performance to secure to the gold medal and establish the new world record Trap Mixed Team finals score of 37 out of 40.

Australia’s duo of Penny Smith and Gabe Sensi fell just two targets short of making an appearance in the Trap Mixed Team Final, with a final qualification score of 143 out of 150.

The LA 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games are now only two years away!

With less than two years to go until the Games, our athletes have their sights firmly set on LA as they look to win Olympic/Paralympic quotas and earn their places on Australia’s Olympic and Paralympic Teams.

The LA 2028 qualification process kicks off this year, with the first Paralympic quotas to be up for grabs at the WSPS World Championships in September, and the first Olympic quotas to be available at the ISSF World Championships in Doha, in November.

Looking forwards to the LA 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games, Shooting Australia’s CEO, Adam Sachs, said “The Olympics/Paralympics are Shooting Australia’s pinnacle events and we’re doing everything we can to support the qualification and performance of our athletes at the Games. LA 2028 represents an amazing opportunity to build on our medal success from Paris 2024."

SHOOTING AUSTRALIA HOSTS IT'S SECOND ANNUAL TRANS-TASMAN PARA TRAINING CAMP

Between the 29th of June and the 5th of July, Shooting Australia hosted its second annual Trans-Tasman Para Training Camp at the Brisbane International Shooting Centre (BISC) in Queensland.

This training camp brought together para shooting athletes from both Australia and New Zealand with the goal of enhancing practical skills, providing educational opportunities, strengthening international relationships and growing target shooting sports participation in the Oceania region.

Building off the success of the inaugural Trans-Tasman camp last year, three para-athletes, as well as a team coach and a member of support staff travelled from New Zealand to Brisbane to take part in this year’s camp.

The Trans-Tasman camp was attended by four Australian high-performance athletes as well as six Para Uplift Program athletes, giving them a chance to learn and improve their skills across four days of camp activities and training opportunities. This event also aligned with the BISC Cup #2 pistol and rifle competition offering the athletes in attendance a chance to put their skills to the test in a tier 1 domestic competition.

Update from the ISSF Shotgun World Cup in Lonato, Italy…

AUSTRALIA CLAIM GOLD! 🥇

4 years on from their bronze medal win in Lonato in 2022, James Willett and Catherine Skinner claim gold in the Trap Mixed Team event at the 2026 ISSF Lonato World Cup.

James Willett and Catherine Skinner rose to the occasion shooting a score of 37 out of 40 targets to secure the gold medal and set a new Trap Mixed Team finals world record, beating the previous score of 36/40.

A successful conclusion to Australia’s Lonato World Cup appearance, with the trap mixed team event being the final competition for this World Cup.

AUS Team 2 - After shooting the combined top qualification score of 146 out of 150 James Willett and Catherine Skinner are through to the Trap Mixed Team final. James and Catherine will join 3 other teams to shoot off in the final which is scheduled to commence at 12:30am AEST (4:30pm local time).

AUS team 1 - Gabe Sensi and Penny Smith finished with a score of 143/150 and only two targets short of a finals chance.

Update from the ISSF Shotgun World Cup in Lonato, Italy…

With the Men’s Trap and Women’s Trap events now finished, our athletes now prepare for the Trap Mixed Teams competition.

The Trap Mixed Teams event will begin with qualifying at 5:00pm AEST (9:00am local time), with teams facing a combined 150 targets. The top 4 highest scoring squads will then progress to the finals.

The finals will also take place tonight at 12:30am AEST (4:30pm local time).

Update from the ISSF Shotgun World Cup in Lonato, Italy…

After shooting a World Cup personal best qualification score of 122 out of 125, Charlton Vella has unfortunately been knocked out of the shoot off and will not progress to the finals.

That concludes the Men’s Trap and Women’s Trap competitions for our Australian athletes.

The Lonato World Cup action continues tomorrow with Trap Mixed Team event.

Update from the ISSF Shotgun World Cup in Lonato, Italy…

After shooting a World Cup personal best qualification score of 122 out of 125, Charlton Vella will be one of 8 athletes in a shoot off to determine positions 3 to 8 in the final.

The shoot off is scheduled to begin shortly. We will provide further updates as the competition progresses.

After facing 125 targets throughout the qualification stage, our athletes’ final scores are:
