Worth the read

I was training a client yesterday, and she asked me a question, which at first i couldn't answer

'Why compete?'

So to put it into context. My mate, coach, therapist and mentor luke, will hit the stage this sunday to compete in ICN , a body building platform. He posted a video to his story yesterday, the last final days before show day, describing how he feels, and being that I've been there before, i could totally relate

Tired, so tired, no energy, hungry, and i don't just mean hungry, its a whole new form of hungry, brain fog, some bloating, bad gas after eating zucchini pasta 😂, and did i mention hungry

As i was telling my client about this i mentioned my own experience, which was very simular, but i also experience poor bowel moment to the point i relied on laxatives, my period stopped (meaning my body decided it was now unfit to reproduce), sleep deprivation, and later my stomach wasn't producing acids the digest food

Post comp i had an unhealthy relationship with food and training and it's something that took some time to correct

So this led my client to ask me, 'Why do it then?'

I couldn't answer at first, because let's be honest, i made it sound like the worst thing that you could possibly want to do to yourself 😂

Then i remembered, it is about self discipline. Showing to YOURSELF that you ARE capable of doing ANYTHING you put your mind to, no matter how hard it is, you CAN push through that to achieve that goal

There is nothing more powerful than achieving something that has been nothing short of grueling, no matter what that is, whether it be running a marathon, climbing Everest, studying for 100 years to become a doctor, child birth without drugs 😳, these are all massive achievements that PUSH the PHYSICAL and MENTAL barriers beyond what they would normally be

That's where we learn about ourselves, what we're capable of

Thank you to Sarah for asking me that question, and reminding me why i did it and who i am because of it

This is what its all about for me

Sarah, new client, we're still getting to know eachother, but it won't be long and I'll know her favorite food and we'll be exchanging clothes lol

But seriously, day 1 of deadlifting with me, and they're on the rotation now for good!!

What part of your body do you dislike the most?

We all know the saying, and I'm 100% sure we've all used it at some stage

"Love the skin you're in"

This gets preached A LOT

But if you're being completely honest with yourself, the sad truth is, we all have a part of ourselves we would like to change, even if we say we don't

If I'm being honest, i have a few, and the one that may surprise people the most, is my legs

I've always struggled to love them, and it wasn't that long ago that i would have rather died than have worn shorts

Fast forward a few years, and you're lucky to SEE me in pants 😂

So what changed?

I did. I changed the way i looked at my legs. I worked on my weaknesses (or what i thought was one) and turned it into my strengths. I knew i had big legs, so i used them to my advantage. I trained them more, started getting stronger, gaining more muscle and i stepped outside of my comfort zone and started wearing shorts. It was pretty much that simple. I decided to love them for what they could do for me rather than dislike them because i thought they were too big

We all have parts of our bodies that we dislike , and to honest i think this is normal..

HOWEVER

what YOU choose to do about it and how YOU choose to feel about it should ALWAYS be spoken as a positive and never a negative

Our bodies are AMAZING and we should always want to look after them and love them, for what they are

Sn**ch grip SLDs

These, i find challenging, but i did them today for something different

Grip is wide, which really engages your lats

Foot stance, i keep the same as i would if i was doing a normal SLD

Back and core, super tight, locked in place and will not move

Hips back, adjust your knees to feel the tension

Head neutral

Slow and controlled

So lets talk some technique

Today i did some sumos. Haven't trained these as much lately as I'm focussing more on glutes and hammies, so I've been doing lots of conventional, but today i worked the quads

Sumo deadlift is predominantly quad and adductor focussed, so if you're looking to build strong quads, this lift is your best friend

In this video, I'm giving 110 a spin, something i haven't tried for a little while, so i go into it, knowing it's going to be heavy

This is when technique is SO IMPORTANT, and this is WHY we practice a correct technique, over and over and over again.

You should be able to lift a challenging weight with the same technique as you would if it was light as a feather

Cues here are:
• shins up against the bar
• hands shoulder width
• pull bar in as you lower hips into place
• lock lats in place, breath in, core tight
• drive the floor apart with your feet, knees out, sqeeze quads
• lock out, still strong core, have not let air out yet
• lower down, breath out, reset and go again


Train this lift a few times a week and you won't be sorry
