I've just been advised by the staff at Thorndon Park Primary School that Stradbroke Road is going to be totally closed to traffic next Tuesday and Wednesday evenings (June 10/11) for resurfacing. As a result there won't be an Athelstone class next Tuesday evening. Classes will recommence as usual the following week.
I don't have everybody's email addresses so please pass this information on to anyone that you know who comes along to the Tuesday evening class.

I’ve mentioned before how the “Sit to Rise” test has been shown to be a reliable indicator of overall health as well as longevity. Where the test falls down (excuse the pun) is that if you have an injury to an ankle, knee or hip etc this may prevent you from being able to perform the test.
In most cases, however, poor performance on the test is likely down to loss of muscle with age and reduced range of motion in the joints.
Unless you work to stop or minimize its loss muscle mass typically decreases approximately 3–8% per decade after the age of 30 and this rate of decline is even higher after the age of 60.
Maintaining muscle mass, particulary in the legs and core, are essential for remaining agile and mobile as we age and are vital for preserving good balance.
In this weeks classes I’ll demonstrate a simple 30 second test to help you gauge if any difficulties with the Sit to Rise test are actually due to muscle loss and weakness.
