North Adelaide Croquet Club also celebrating its centenary year

Club members are looking forward to Saturday, when the club will formally celebrate 100 years of hooping in Marrickville! A highlight will be the launch of the club history by local member Haylen. Thank you to Inner West Council for the Local History Grant which has supported the production of the publication. Thank you also to all those that have contributed to the project. Invited guests will then enjoy light refreshments, before the final of the re-launched Birdie Telfer Memorial Trophy, this year GC Women's Doubles.

Some mornings… I’ll be honest…
I’ve woken up frustrated.

Frustrated that so few were pushing croquet forward…
despite the constant talk of dwindling numbers and the future of the game.

Frustrated that something as brilliant as this game felt… stuck.
Frustrated that even close to home, there was little appetite to build something bigger and definitely better.

And if I’m being completely honest…
I’ve lost count of the number of times Croquet Talk has been overlooked…
dismissed…put down,
or quietly rejected by parts of the croquet community.

And yet…

Something happened.

Without backing.
Without a blueprint.
Without a queue of people lining up to help.

Croquet Talk started to grow.

Not because it shouted the loudest…
But because it believed the strongest.

And here’s the truth —

It was never just me.

It was those who were there at the very beginning…
who saw something before it was fully formed.

And it’s also those who found Croquet Talk along the way…
who recognised that same belief and chose to be part of it.

You didn’t just follow…
you carried the belief forward.

That matters more than anything.

Because this has never been built on noise…
or approval…

It’s been built on people who care enough to say —
this is worth something.

And for that — genuinely — thank you.

Because Croquet Talk is no longer just a page.
It’s a place where croquet is moving forward —
through image, through conversation, through people who believe in it.

And if you’re reading this and haven’t joined yet…

You’re not late.

You’re right on time.

Because Croquet Talk is still growing.
Still evolving.
Still pushing.

And it needs people who believe in where it can go.

As Winston Churchill once said:

“Success is not final. Failure is not fatal.
It is the courage to continue that counts.”

That’s what this is.

Courage to continue.

And together…
we’re only just getting started.

Croquet Curiosity #1
Did you know that croquet was once considered too competitive for polite society?
In the late 1800s, some garden hosts in England actually stopped allowing croquet at social gatherings.
Why?
Because players became so determined to win that friendly lawn parties sometimes turned into fierce tactical battles.
Imagine Victorian ladies and gentlemen in formal dress…
politely smiling while quietly plotting the next devastating croquet break.
Perhaps some things about croquet haven’t changed much at all.
😄

Let me know, — have you ever seen croquet become too competitive?

This week marks the 100th anniversary of the Prospect Croquet Club. Founded on 2nd March 1926, the early members of the club were all women as few men played croquet at the time. In April 1932 a croquet contest for men was held at the Fitzroy Club, and is believed to be the first of its kind in South Australia.

Prospect and Fitzroy Croquet Clubs amalgamated in 2002 to form the North Adelaide Croquet Club.

There is currently a display of memorabilia belonging to the Club in the Prospect Library as part of their Centennial celebrations and we'd love you to go and take a look.

Our congratulations to the Croquet Club on this fantastic milestone. Enjoy your celebrations and here's to the next 100 years!.
